Wood stove permits in Oak Creek.

Apply to Oak Creek Inspection Services.

Inside the City of Oak Creek, permits come from Inspection Services at City Hall, 8040 S. 6th Street (414-766-7002). Its Residential HVAC page says permits are required for installing or replacing heating units, fireplaces and wood-burning stoves, and that a contractor holding a state HVAC registration must do the work unless SPS 305.70 allows otherwise. The city’s FAQ adds that a fireplace or wood-burning stove may also need a building and/or electrical permit, asks you to call Inspection Services before proceeding, and says the stove’s specs must accompany the HVAC application. Ask which permits your stove, insert or chimney needs.

City of Oak Creek: Residential HVAC

The city code lists wood burners by name.

Oak Creek’s building code chapter (Chapter 15, revised August 2026) lists permits the owner or agent must get from the Inspection Division. Its mechanical item covers every new boiler, furnace, incinerator or wood burner, including a fireplace, and any chimney or fuel supply system. No Oak Creek rule limiting indoor wood burning or banning new stoves was found.

Doing it yourself? You must live there.

Oak Creek says homeowners who want to pull their own HVAC permits must physically live at the address where the work will be done; otherwise a state-registered HVAC contractor must do the work. Owners who pull a building permit also sign a state cautionary statement warning that hiring an unbonded or uninsured contractor can leave them liable for injuries or damage.

City of Oak Creek: Residential HVAC

Expect an electrical permit and a final.

Oak Creek’s Residential HVAC Permit Application (dated January 1, 2025) lists wood burning equipment among the equipment types and sets a $60 minimum subtotal. It says a final inspection and an electrical permit are required for all HVAC equipment replacements, and inspection requests need at least 24 hours’ notice. Ask whether your stove job counts as new or replacement.
