Burning wood fireplace framed by dark stone in a warm living room

Begin with the existing fireplace.

Share photos of the fireplace, any appliance label, and the opening dimensions if you have them. Fireplace type and condition matter; an insert is not suitable for every existing fireplace.

The chimney deserves a closer look.

An installer should evaluate the existing system and explain any inspection, liner, repair, or other work required for the chosen appliance. Include known issues or past inspection findings in your request.

Tell us what you want to change.

Whether your priority is supplemental warmth, updating an older insert, or planning around outages, include it in the project brief. Ask the installer how the specific appliance operates without electricity.

A few things worth knowing

Good questions. Clear answers.

Does my home need an existing chimney?

Not necessarily. A new chimney system may be an option. A local installer needs to evaluate the building, location, and applicable requirements before confirming what is possible.

Will FireplaceLab give me the installation quote?

Your installer provides the assessment and quote. FireplaceLab collects your project details and helps look for a suitable local provider. We do not perform installations or set the installer’s prices.

Is there a fee to request a match?

There is no charge to submit your project. An installer may charge for a site visit or assessment; ask about any fees before booking. We may receive a referral fee from participating providers.

Do you have an installer in every area?

Availability varies by location and project. Submitting a request does not guarantee a match. We’ll use your project details to check for a suitable provider.

Can a wood stove provide heat during an outage?

Tell your installer that outage use is a priority. Ask them to confirm how the specific appliance operates without power, including any fans or controls, and whether it suits your heating needs.
