Inside Green Bay, permits come from the Inspections staff of the Department of Community and Economic Development at 100 N. Jefferson St., Room 608. The city’s ‘Do I Need a Permit?’ table lists a fireplace as needing a permit, lists HVAC work as needing a permit, and says to contact Inspections about chimneys. It does not name wood stoves or inserts, so call 920-448-3300 or email inspmail@greenbaywi.gov to confirm which application applies. The residential permit packet says every project starts with a Project Permits Application, reviews take five to ten business days, and final inspections are required. Allouez, Ashwaubenon, Bellevue and De Pere are separate municipalities.
Green Bay: Do I Need a Permit?Green Bay Metro Fire Department’s guidelines (Sec. 18-66) allow recreational fires and listed portable fire pits at single- and two-family homes. In-ground pits must be 25 feet from buildings, combustibles and property lines, and fires are limited to 3 feet across and 3 feet high. Only clean dry wood may be burned, never treated or painted wood, yard waste or construction lumber, and burning is banned when wind exceeds 10 mph. These rules cover outdoor fires, not an indoor stove.
Green Bay recreational/open fire guidelines (2023, PDF)Green Bay says an owner who currently lives at the property can get permits and do their own work, but all rental properties need a licensed contractor to pull the permit and do the work. The permit packet adds a state-required cautionary statement: if you hire a contractor who is not bonded or insured as Wisconsin law requires, you may be liable for injuries or damage from the work.
Green Bay residential permit packet (Rev 11/25, PDF)Green Bay Metro Fire Department publishes separate fire pit guidelines for Green Bay, the Village of Allouez and the Village of Bellevue, in English and Spanish. If you live in one of those villages, read that village’s version. For stove permits, those villages are separate municipalities, so a Green Bay permit does not cover them; check with the village office.
