Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Beloit.

Get a heating permit from Planning and Building Services.

Inside City of Beloit limits, Planning and Building Services at City Hall, 100 State Street, third floor (608-364-6700), reviews one- and two-family projects and takes applications at permits@beloitwi.gov. The Town of Beloit has its own office, and South Beloit is in Illinois. Municipal Code 26.01 requires a permit from the city’s plumbing inspector before any space heating system is installed, taken out by the heating contractor or another qualified person; the city lists a Plumbing and HVAC Inspector. The city adopts Wisconsin’s Uniform Dwelling Code for the homes it covers, and work is inspected before a certificate of occupancy. No page names wood stoves, so confirm the permit.

City of Beloit: Planning and Building Services

Outdoor fires are limited to screened portable fireplaces.

The city says its ordinance allows recreational fires only in portable outdoor fireplaces fitted with a screen that stops embers escaping. Fires aren’t allowed when sustained winds or gusts exceed 15 mph, must burn dry, untreated wood that stays inside the unit, and need an attendant 18 or older and an extinguishing agent on hand. The fireplace must sit at least 10 feet from any building. These rules cover outdoor fires only; we found no city rule limiting indoor stove use.

Landmark or historic district? Get the certificate first.

Beloit’s Landmarks Commission must approve a Certificate of Appropriateness before a building permit issues for exterior alterations, additions, new construction or demolition on a landmark site or in a historic district. Municipal Code 32.06 lets the Community Development Director approve a short list of items, including roof repair or replacement and chimney repair and tuckpointing done to Secretary of the Interior standards. A new chimney or flue isn’t on that list, so ask staff (608-364-6700) whether it needs a Commission hearing.

City of Beloit: Landmarks Commission

Building next to a neighbour’s chimney has a cost.

Beloit Municipal Code 9.23 says that when a building is erected or raised so a wall along or within 3 feet of a lot line rises above an adjoining building’s chimney, the owner doing the work must extend, at their own expense and with the neighbour’s consent, every chimney and vent serving liquid- or solid-fuel appliances next door. If a neighbour is building close to a house with a stove, ask the city how this applies.

What to ask a Beloit installer.

  1. Will you take out the City of Beloit heating permit with the plumbing and HVAC inspector, and do you work in Wisconsin under the Uniform Dwelling Code?
  2. If my house is a landmark or in a historic district, does your plan need a Landmarks Commission certificate before the permit?
  3. Is my address in the City of Beloit or the Town of Beloit, and have you worked with that office before?

Beloit wood stove installation FAQs.

Who handles the permit for a wood stove in Beloit?

For homes inside City of Beloit limits, Planning and Building Services at City Hall, 100 State Street (608-364-6700, permits@beloitwi.gov). City code requires a heating permit from the plumbing inspector before a space heating system is installed. The Town of Beloit has its own office, and South Beloit, Illinois is a different state. No city page names wood stoves, so call first.

Does a historic district home need extra approval?

Yes, for exterior changes. Beloit’s Landmarks Commission must approve a Certificate of Appropriateness before a building permit issues on a landmark site or in a historic district. Staff can approve chimney repair and tuckpointing, but a new chimney or flue isn’t on the staff list, so plan for a possible Commission review and ask staff early.

Can I have an outdoor fire pit as well?

Only a portable outdoor fireplace with a spark screen. Beloit allows recreational fires only in those units, at least 10 feet from buildings, burning dry untreated wood, attended by an adult, and not in winds over 15 mph. Yard waste can’t be burned. These rules don’t address indoor stoves, and we found no city limit on indoor wood burning.
