Its wood stove page lists Lopi, Ironstrike and Enerzone wood stoves, and its home page says it can handle all hearth installation and service needs, with supervised installation and a showroom. The site does not say who performs installs, so ask whether its own crew does the work and who files the Appleton HVAC permit.

Inside Appleton city limits, the Inspections Division at City Hall, 100 N. Appleton St., issues trade permits. Its online HVAC permit includes a residential stove/fireplace option and asks for the license holder’s city license number and state HVAC certification number; the permit is not valid until an approved copy is emailed back. Inspections are booked at 920-832-6411, and inspectors keep office hours at City Hall from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. on weekdays. Because Appleton spans Outagamie, Calumet and Winnebago counties, neighbouring municipalities such as Grand Chute, Menasha or Kimberly have their own permit offices, so confirm your address first.
City of Appleton HVAC permit applicationAppleton’s municipal code requires a permit for outdoor fires except those using natural gas, propane or charcoal, and the fire department inspects the appliance and burn site. Only natural wood or manufactured fireplace logs may be burned, never treated wood, leaves, garbage or newspaper. Burning is banned when winds exceed 9 mph, and fires must be 10 feet from buildings, fences and property lines. These rules cover outdoor fire pits, not an indoor stove.
Appleton outdoor fireplace permitsAppleton’s code (Sec. 4-476) lets the owner and occupant of a home do heating work in it without a heating license, but they must still get a permit and have the work inspected and approved by the Inspections Division. The city’s FAQ adds that this generally applies to a single-family home you own and occupy. Sec. 4-497 sets a separate permit fee for wood-burning stoves and fireplaces, and triples the fee if work starts before the permit.
Municipal Code of the City of Appleton, Ch. 4 (PDF)Appleton’s Building Inspections FAQ says the only way to know whether an existing masonry chimney needs a liner is to talk with the heating inspector, and that ‘it is never wrong’ to install a correctly sized chimney liner system. The FAQ is written about furnace changes, but the same call is worth making before a stove or insert goes into an old chimney.
Appleton Building InspectionsAppleton’s Historic Preservation Commission reviews and approves proposed exterior changes to locally designated buildings and sites. The city lists five: the Trettin House, Henry Schuetter House, Union Springs Park well site, John Hart Whorton House and the Vulcan Street hydroelectric replica. Most homes are not affected, but if yours is one of them, contact the Principal Planner at 920-832-6466 before any chimney work.

Appleton’s code lets the owner and occupant of a home do heating work in it without a license, but a permit and an approved inspection are still required. The city’s FAQ says this generally applies to a single-family home you own and occupy. Call Inspections at 920-832-6411 to confirm before buying.
Not always. The City of Appleton spans Outagamie, Calumet and Winnebago counties, and neighbouring municipalities such as Grand Chute have their own permit offices, so an Appleton mailing address may not mean the city issues your permit. Check your property tax bill or ask Appleton Inspections at 920-832-6411 before applying.
The rules we found cover outdoor fires: a fire department permit with an inspection, natural wood only, and no burning in winds over 9 mph. We did not find an Appleton or county rule restricting indoor stove use. Wisconsin requires solid-fuel appliances in covered homes to be tested and listed.
