Wood stove permits in Watertown.

Apply to Inspectional Services through OpenGov.

Inside Watertown, the Inspector of Buildings in Inspectional Services reviews building applications against the Massachusetts State Building Code, and says permits are required for most work on or in a structure; minor repairs and painting are among the few exceptions. Applications go through the city’s OpenGov portal, which has separate building permit applications for one- and two-family homes and for all other buildings, plus a sheet metal and mechanical permit that only a licensed sheet metal worker can apply for. No Watertown page names wood stoves, so ask which permits cover the stove, connector and liner. Residential inspections are booked at 617-972-6480. Newton, Waltham and Cambridge issue their own permits.

Who this guide fits in a dense city.

Watertown’s permit system draws its line at owner occupancy. The city’s one- and two-family permit application allows an owner to apply only for a home they live in or will live in; a landlord who lives elsewhere needs a licensed contractor, and three-family and larger buildings always do. This guide fits owner-occupants. Tenants should not add a stove and should raise heating concerns with the owner, and condo owners should check association rules before planning a flue.

Watertown OpenGov: Building Permit Application – One & Two Family

Sheet metal work has its own licensed permit.

Watertown’s Sheet Metal & Mechanical Permit Application must be filed by a Massachusetts Sheet Metal License holder, and the applicant must be the licensee responsible for the permit. It lists insurance certificates, plans and a copy of the contract among the uploads. If your stove needs a new metal chimney or ducted connector, ask whether this permit applies alongside the building permit, and who on the crew holds the license.

Larger buildings carry inspection certificates.

Watertown’s fee schedule, revised June 15, 2026, prices building permits for single- and two-family homes and for other buildings at the same $15 per $1,000, with a $50 minimum, charges $75 per re-inspection and doubles the fee for work without a permit. It also lists certificates of inspection for buildings with three or more residential units, starting at $75. The schedule has no stove line; confirm current amounts with Inspectional Services.

Give the stove its own flue.

The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services says a building permit is needed before installing a wood stove, the local building inspector must inspect it before first use, and solid-fuel appliances must not share a flue with another solid-fuel, oil or gas appliance. If your Watertown chimney already vents a boiler or water heater, possibly for two units, ask whether the stove needs a separate liner or a new metal chimney.

What to ask a Watertown installer.

  1. Will you apply through Watertown’s OpenGov portal as the CSL holder, or should I file the owner-occupant application myself?
  2. Does this job also need Watertown’s sheet metal and mechanical permit, and who on your crew holds that license?
  3. In my two-family house, will the stove get its own flue rather than sharing the boilers’ chimney?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.

Will you save on heating?

Answers before you request a quote

Watertown wood stove installation FAQs.

Can I pull the Watertown permit myself?

Only for a one- or two-family home you live in or will live in once the work is done. Watertown’s one- and two-family application says otherwise a Construction Supervisor’s License holder must apply, and for three-family and larger buildings only a CSL holder can. If you pull it yourself, you take on responsibility for the permit, so many owners leave it to the installer.

I rent in Watertown. Can I add a wood stove?

Not on your own. The permit goes to the owner or a licensed contractor, and a stove ties into the building’s chimney, which may also vent other units’ heating equipment. Tenants should raise heating concerns with the owner. This guide is aimed at owner-occupants planning their own project.

What does a Watertown stove permit cost?

Watertown’s fee schedule, revised June 15, 2026, has no stove line. Building permits are $15 per $1,000 of estimated construction cost with a $50 minimum, and sheet metal and mechanical permits use the same rate. Re-inspections are $75 and work without a permit costs double. Ask your installer which permits the job needs.
