Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Revere.

Apply online to the Building Division.

Inside Revere, permits come from the Building Division of Inspectional Services, based in the American Legion Building basement at 249R Broadway (781-286-8311; Building Commissioner 781-286-8197). Every permit the Building Department oversees, including building, mechanical and sheet metal permits, is applied for online only through the city’s e-permitting portal, and contractors must upload a valid state license and a workers’ compensation affidavit. No Revere page names wood stoves, so ask which permit covers the stove, connector and liner. Massachusetts fire-safety guidance says a building permit is needed before installing a wood stove and the local inspector must inspect it before use. Chelsea, Winthrop and Saugus issue their own permits.

Revere Building Division

No open burning; indoor stoves aren’t addressed.

The Revere Fire Department states that no open burning is allowed for any reason in the city. That notice is about outdoor fires, and no Revere page found restricts a permitted, inspected indoor wood stove. It does mean a stove is not a way around the outdoor ban, and ash or debris cannot be burned outside. If your house sits close to its neighbours, ask the installer how the chimney will clear nearby roofs and windows.

Application fees and a triple charge.

Revere City Council Order 25-179, dated August 25, 2025, sets a $75 building permit application fee for a single- or two-family dwelling ($100 for three-family and larger), residential renovation fees of $15 per $1,000, a $150 reinspection fee, and three times the permit fee when building work starts before a permit is obtained. It lists no wood stove fee, so the amount depends on declared job value. Confirm it with the Building Division.

Work hours and public permit records.

Revere’s Building Division says work under its permits is allowed Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with no work on Sundays or holidays unless the Building Commissioner grants a special permit. It also makes permit applications, reviews and inspections filed since March 2018 viewable in CitizenServe, so you can look up earlier chimney or heating permits at your address before planning the flue.

What to ask a Revere installer.

  1. Will you apply through Revere’s online portal with your state license and workers’ compensation affidavit uploaded?
  2. Which Revere permit will you file for the stove and liner — building, mechanical or sheet metal?
  3. Can the installation be done Monday to Saturday between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., within Revere’s permitted work hours?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.

Answers before you request a quote

Revere wood stove installation FAQs.

Can I apply for a Revere permit in person?

Revere says permits overseen by the Building Department are applied for online only, through the city’s e-permitting portal. You register with an email address, pick the permit type, upload documents, and an inspector replies by email. Contractors who have not uploaded a valid license and workers’ compensation affidavit will not be issued a permit. Call 781-286-8197 for help.

Does Revere’s burning ban cover wood stoves?

The Fire Department’s notice says no open burning is allowed for any reason in Revere. It does not mention indoor stoves, and no Revere page found bans them. A stove still needs a permit and, under state guidance, an inspection by the local building inspector before first use. Ask the Fire Department about any outdoor fire appliance.

Do these installers actually serve Revere?

Barry John Chimney Services, Britt’s Chimney & Masonry and Sam & Ivan The Chimney Guys list Revere on their serving-area pages, and Billy Sweet Chimney Sweep lists it on its North Shore page. None is based in Revere. Confirm your street is covered, the lead time and who applies for the permit.
