Its Cambridge page says it has worked in the city since the business began and offers its fireplace installation services there, and its inserts page offers to assess a masonry fireplace and chimney before fitting an EPA-compliant wood insert. Much of the Cambridge page covers gas and electric units, so confirm wood-insert work and who applies for the ISD permit.

Inside Cambridge, building permits come from the Inspectional Services Department (ISD) at 831 Massachusetts Avenue (617-349-6100). Its online portal lists a short-form building permit for interior renovations and other minor alterations, plus separate mechanical and sheet metal permit applications. None of them mentions wood stoves or inserts, so ask ISD which permits and inspections apply to your appliance, liner or chimney before ordering equipment. Massachusetts fire-safety guidance says a building permit is needed before installing a wood stove and the local building inspector must inspect it before use. Somerville, Arlington, Belmont and Boston are separate municipalities with their own building departments.
Cambridge ISD online permit applicationsThe Cambridge Historical Commission issues three certificates. A Certificate of Non-Applicability covers interior alterations and work not visible from a public way, and staff generally issue it on the spot. Visible changes need a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Commission. The city says one of these certificates is always necessary to obtain a building permit in a district or on a landmark. A new visible flue, cap or chimney change is the part to discuss with staff (617-349-4683).
Cambridge Historical Commission: districts and historic propertiesCambridge’s Fossil Fuel Free Ordinance, in effect since March 22, 2024, bars new oil, gas or propane equipment in new buildings and in the permitted work area of a major renovation. For a one- or two-family home, that includes renovating half of a building over 1,000 square feet. The city’s page does not mention wood. If a stove is part of a larger renovation, ask ISD how the ordinance applies before choosing between wood and gas.
Cambridge Fossil Fuel Free OrdinanceThe Mid Cambridge Neighborhood Conservation District runs from Prospect Street to Prescott Street and from Massachusetts Avenue north to Kirkland Street and the Somerville line. Its commission conducts advisory or binding reviews depending on the scope of work and asks owners and contractors to contact staff during planning (617-349-4686). Check whether your chimney or roof vent route would be visible from a public way.

The Historical Commission says you can check an address with the city’s MyCambridge tool or call 617-349-4683. The districts are Old Cambridge and Fort Washington (historic) plus Mid Cambridge, Half Crown-Marsh, Avon Hill and Harvard Square (conservation). If you are in one, a Commission certificate is needed before ISD issues a building permit, even when the change is interior.
Nothing found on the city’s pages bans wood stoves in existing homes, but multi-unit buildings add steps. Condo documents or the other owner may control roofs, chimneys and shared flues, and a shared chimney raises code questions. Get written consent where needed and confirm the venting plan with ISD before paying a deposit.
The Fossil Fuel Free Ordinance applies to new buildings and major renovations, and the city lists oil, gas and propane as the fuels it covers. Its page does not mention wood. A stand-alone stove in an existing home is not a major renovation under the city’s thresholds, but confirm with ISD if the stove is part of a larger project.
