Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Grove City.

Check your parcel, then apply to Grove City Building & Zoning.

Inside Grove City, the Building and Zoning Division at 4035 Broadway (614-277-3075) issues permits, and residents and contractors start through the city’s online portal. Its forms page says parcels beginning 040 are under the city’s jurisdiction, while Jackson Township parcels (160) are permitted for residential work by the Franklin County Building Department, so look up your parcel on the Franklin County Auditor site first. The city’s permit cover sheet lists HVAC and fuel-gas permit types and a Mechanical/HVAC contractor line, but no page read names wood stoves, inserts or liners. Ask which permit covers your appliance and venting. Owner-occupants doing their own work attach a homeowner affidavit.

Historic Broadway: exterior changes need a certificate.

Grove City’s Historical Preservation Area, set out in Chapter 1138 of the codified ordinances, covers properties facing Broadway from Southwest Boulevard to about 341 feet south of Woodlawn Avenue, plus Park Street and Columbus Street east to Haughn Road. Section 1138.05 requires a certificate of appropriateness before new construction, remodeling, reconstruction or demolition there; ordinary maintenance is exempt. Exterior changes are judged against the building’s original character. A new chimney, chase or roof stovepipe on an older Broadway-area home is the kind of change to raise with the Building Division before ordering parts.

Hire a registered contractor, or sign the affidavit.

Grove City charges $100 per contractor registration type. HVAC registration requires a current State of Ohio license, all registrants need at least $300,000 in liability insurance naming Grove City, and ‘Masonry Fireplaces’ is a separate home-improvement category. The packet says work may not start without an approved permit. An owner-occupant doing the work instead signs a homeowner affidavit, notarized or signed before city staff, and agrees not to contract with unregistered contractors.

Home-improvement permits are billed per inspection.

Grove City’s fee schedule, Section 1305.17 (file dated 2024), lists residential home improvements, including HVAC replacement, at a $25 application fee plus $10 per inspection, with a 1% State Board of Building Standards fee added. It does not name wood stoves, so confirm which category and how many inspections your stove, insert or liner will need before you compare quotes.

What to ask a Grove City installer.

  1. Does my parcel number start with 040 (Grove City) or 160 (Jackson Township), and which office will you file the permit with?
  2. Is your company registered with Grove City for HVAC or masonry fireplace work, and will that registration cover this job?
  3. If the house is in the Broadway historic area, does the chimney or stovepipe need a certificate of appropriateness first?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.

Answers before you request a quote

Grove City wood stove installation FAQs.

Who issues a wood stove permit in Grove City, Ohio?

It depends on the parcel. Grove City’s Building and Zoning Division, at 4035 Broadway (614-277-3075), permits parcels beginning 040. Its forms page says residential projects on Jackson Township parcels, beginning 160, are permitted by the Franklin County Building Department. The city’s forms do not name wood stoves, so ask which permit type covers the stove, insert and liner.

Can I install a wood stove myself in Grove City?

Grove City’s permit forms let an occupying homeowner of a single-family home select ‘homeowner’ for trade work, but the applicant must attach a homeowner affidavit, notarized or signed before city staff. The affidavit says work by anyone else needs registered contractors, and a permit is still required. Confirm inspections before the stove is used.

Does Grove City’s historic area affect a chimney or stovepipe?

Possibly. Chapter 1138 covers properties facing Broadway between Southwest Boulevard and just south of Woodlawn Avenue, and parts of Park and Columbus streets. Section 1138.05 requires a certificate of appropriateness before new construction or remodeling there, with exterior changes reviewed against the building’s original character. Ask the Building Division before adding an exterior chimney or roof vent.
