Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Columbus.

Start with Building & Zoning Services.

Inside Columbus city limits, Building and Zoning Services (BZS) handles permits and inspections. Its mechanical inspection page says inspections are required for work such as HVAC, exhaust, fuel-gas piping and pre-fabricated fireplaces. It does not name freestanding wood stoves or inserts, so ask BZS which permit covers your appliance, liner and any new chimney. The BZS FAQ says separate permits are required for each trade and that homeowners may do work on their own single-family home. Many addresses with a Columbus mailing city are in another municipality or township; the FAQ points to the city’s zoning map to confirm jurisdiction.

Check MORPC air alerts before burning.

The Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission forecasts particle pollution year round and issues an Air Quality Alert for Central Ohio when pollution is expected to reach 101 AQI or above. Its wood-burning guidance, such as checking air quality first, burning small hot fires and using only seasoned wood, is written as advice rather than a burn ban. FireplaceLab found no Columbus rule barring indoor stove use on alert days; confirm current guidance if you plan to rely on a stove.

In German Village? Apply before exterior work.

The German Village Commission reviews exterior alterations in the German Village Historic District under Columbus City Code chapters 3116 and 3119 and the district guidelines. It focuses on exterior changes, not interiors. A new chimney, visible flue or roof penetration is an exterior change, so apply for a Certificate of Appropriateness before ordering a chimney kit, and ask whether another Columbus historic commission covers your address.

Self-permitting has limits.

The BZS FAQ says a homeowner may perform work on their own single-family home, with help only from immediate family, and lists mechanical changes to an existing single-family dwelling among work owners can permit themselves. That does not extend to rentals or multi-family buildings. If you hire help beyond family, the contractor should pull the permit; confirm the rules with BZS before starting.

What to ask a Columbus installer.

  1. Will you obtain the Columbus BZS permit and schedule the mechanical inspection?
  2. Is my address inside Columbus city limits, or will another city or township issue the permit?
  3. If the house is in German Village, does your timeline include a Certificate of Appropriateness for chimney work?

Answers before you request a quote

Columbus wood stove installation FAQs.

Does a Columbus mailing address mean the city issues my permit?

Not necessarily. Several suburbs and townships share Columbus mailing addresses. The Building and Zoning Services FAQ points owners to the City of Columbus zoning map to check whether a property is inside the city. If it is outside, contact that municipality or township before relying on Columbus guidance.

Can I install a wood stove myself in Columbus?

The BZS FAQ says a homeowner may do work on their own single-family home, with help only from immediate family, and lists mechanical changes among self-permitted work. The stove still has to be installed to its listing and venting instructions and pass inspection. Confirm the permit type with BZS before you buy materials.

Do MORPC Air Quality Alerts ban indoor wood stoves?

MORPC’s air-quality page presents its wood-burning guidance as advice: check air quality, burn small hot fires, use seasoned wood. FireplaceLab did not find a Columbus rule banning indoor stove use on alert days. If you plan to rely on a stove during outages, sign up for alerts and check the current guidance.
