Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Canton.

Apply for an HVAC permit with Canton’s Building Department.

Inside Canton city limits, the Building Department at 424 Market Avenue N (3rd floor) issues HVAC permits, and its application lists “Wood Stoves or Pre-Fab Fireplace” with a spec sheet required. The form says the applicant must verify the job is inside Canton city limits; North Canton, Canton Township, Plain Township and other neighbours have their own arrangements. The permit holder is either a Canton-registered contractor or the property owner, who must also complete a separate owner’s affidavit. Fees are non-refundable. Since October 1, 2025 applications and inspection requests can go through the city’s iWorQ portal, and the form says inspections are scheduled on the main line, 330-430-7800.

A Canton office runs Stark County’s air program.

The Air Pollution Control Division of Canton City Public Health works under contract with Ohio EPA for all of Stark County. It runs PM2.5 monitors in Canton at the health department and Fire Station #8 and enforces Ohio’s open-burning rules. Outdoor recreational fires must use clean seasoned firewood and stay within three feet across and two feet high. No indoor wood stove restriction was found, but smoke complaints and burning questions go to this office at 330-489-3231, option 7.

Backyard fires need 48 hours’ notice.

Canton’s recreational fire rules (Codified Ordinance 1513) require notice to the Fire Prevention Bureau at least 48 hours ahead, by phone or online, on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fires must be at least 25 feet from any structure, burn only seasoned dry firewood, stay within two feet in each dimension, and be out by 11 p.m. Leaves, brush, pallets and treated lumber are banned. A stove shouldn’t burn those materials either.

Downtown SID? Call the Architectural Review Board.

Canton’s HVAC permit application tells owners of projects inside downtown Canton’s Special Improvement District to contact the Architectural Review Board at 330-458-2091. A new exterior flue, chimney cap or wall vent on a downtown building is visible work, so check with the board before you file for the HVAC permit.

Remodelers can’t do the HVAC part.

Canton’s Building Department licenses home improvement contractors for remodeling work on one- to three-family homes, but says those licenses do not cover plumbing, electrical or HVAC work, which have separate licensing. If a remodeler is building the hearth or wall shield, confirm who holds the HVAC registration for the stove, connector and chimney.

What to ask a Canton installer.

  1. Are you registered with Canton’s Building Department to hold the HVAC permit, and will you attach the stove’s spec sheet the application requires?
  2. Have you confirmed the address is inside Canton city limits rather than North Canton, Canton Township or Plain Township?
  3. If the building is in the downtown Special Improvement District, will you check with the Architectural Review Board before exterior flue work?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.

Will you save on heating?

Answers before you request a quote

Canton wood stove installation FAQs.

Does Canton require a permit for a wood stove?

Yes. Canton’s HVAC permit application includes a checkbox for “Wood Stoves or Pre-Fab Fireplace” and requires a spec sheet or technical data for every installation. Fees are non-refundable and were not published online, so ask the Building Department at 330-430-7800 for the current amount.

I live in Canton Township or North Canton. Is this the right permit?

Not necessarily. The HVAC application puts the burden on the applicant to verify the job is inside Canton city limits. North Canton, Canton Township and Plain Township are separate jurisdictions, so check your address before applying. Stark County’s air program, run by Canton City Public Health, covers all of them. Also, don’t confuse this Canton with Canton, Michigan.

Is there any Stark County rule against burning wood indoors?

None was found. Canton City Public Health’s Air Pollution Control Division enforces Ohio EPA’s open-burning rules across Stark County and runs PM2.5 monitors in Canton, but its pages cover outdoor burning. Canton’s Fire Prevention Bureau advises burning only dry, seasoned wood and never trash.
