Wood stove permits in Grand Forks.

Request a mechanical permit from Building Safety.

The Department of Building Safety, 255 N. 4th Street (701-746-2631), reviews, inspects and approves all mechanical work in city limits and the city’s two-mile extraterritorial area; its Mechanical page sends properties beyond that to Grand Forks County. Permits are requested through an online Mechanical Permit Request Form. The page lists ground-work, rough-in and final inspections, with rough-in once a gas or wood fireplace is set and vented. The fee table shows a $30 issuance fee plus $12 for a factory-built fireplace; no wood stove line appears, so ask how a stove or insert is counted. The city follows the 2021 International Mechanical Code.

Backyard fires have rules; smoke can be ordered out.

Grand Forks Fire Department rules say recreational fires need no permit but must be small (3 feet across, 2 feet high), 25 feet from structures or 15 feet in an approved container, constantly attended, and burn no yard waste or trash. The department can order out a fire whose smoke or odor is offensive, objectionable or hazardous. These rules cover outdoor fires, not a stove vented through a chimney; FireplaceLab found no city rule limiting indoor wood stoves. At a 7°F January normal, plan for steady winter use and dry, seasoned wood.

Doing it yourself? Only in the home you live in.

The Mechanical page says homeowners may do mechanical work only in the home they currently live in, with no part of it rented, and asks them to call the Inspections Department first. The Residential Project Guide adds that if a contractor is hired, the contractor takes out the permit. Renters and landlords should plan on a licensed installer.

Check the installer’s city mechanical license.

Grand Forks requires all contractors working in city boundaries to be licensed. For mechanical installers, the Contractor Licenses page lists a North Dakota contractor license, a $5,000 license and permit bond payable to the city, a certificate of insurance and a city master mechanical license ($170 a year) after a written test. Journeyman installers hold a separate $55 license. Ask any stove installer for its city license number.

Grand Forks wood stove installation FAQs.

Who issues wood stove permits in Grand Forks?

The city’s Department of Building Safety, at 255 N. 4th Street (701-746-2631). It covers properties inside city limits and in the two-mile extraterritorial area around the city. Beyond that line, the Mechanical page sends people to Grand Forks County. East Grand Forks, Minnesota has its own permit office.

Can I install a wood stove myself in Grand Forks?

Only in the home you live in. The city’s Mechanical page says homeowners may do mechanical work in the home they presently reside in, with no part of it rented, and asks them to call the Inspections Department first. Otherwise, a contractor licensed with the city takes out the permit.

Are there burn bans that stop me from using a stove?

FireplaceLab found no Grand Forks rule limiting indoor wood stoves. The Fire Department’s recreational fire rules cover outdoor fires: size limits, setbacks, constant attendance and no yard waste or trash, and the department can order out fires with offensive smoke. A properly vented stove is covered by the mechanical code instead.
