Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in North Tonawanda.

Apply to the Building Department at City Hall, 216 Payne Avenue.

Inside North Tonawanda, the City Building Department issues building permits under the New York State Fire Prevention and Building Code. Call 716-695-8595, or email the general application to the building office. Contractors must bring a copy of the signed contract, and the Building Department says all contractors must be licensed by the City. Electrical work needs a separate permit and inspector (716-444-1237), and failing to call for inspections brings fines. The posted forms do not include a stove-specific application, so ask the Building Inspector which permit, fee and inspections apply to a wood stove, insert or new chimney.

The City’s smoke ordinance covers home wood heat.

North Tonawanda’s Smoke and Air Pollution chapter dates from 1956. Section 79-13 says fuel-burning equipment heating private residences of fewer than five units must have efficient smoke-eliminating apparatus unless it burns anthracite, coke, oil, gas or another smokeless fuel. Section 79-7 says residential heating plans need not be filed with the Smoke Inspector unless that office asks for them. Ask the Building Inspector how the rule is applied to an EPA-certified stove before you buy.

Historic district work needs a Certificate of Appropriateness.

North Tonawanda’s Historic Preservation Commission, set up under Chapter 51 of the City Code in 2005, says a Certificate of Appropriateness and a building permit are required for all external work on a structure in a historic district or listed as a historic property. That includes changes to building configuration, which a new chimney or wall vent can be. Applications go to the Building Inspector’s office, and the commission usually meets on the third Monday of the month.

Your installer needs a North Tonawanda contractor licence.

The City’s contractor licence application costs $125 a year, expires December 31, and lists ‘Fireplace/Chimney’ among the trade categories. The insurer must agree to send the City a certificate on renewal, and if insurance lapses the licence is suspended and no building permits are issued. The form warns that contractors working in the City without a licence or permit face a fine or imprisonment. Ask any installer for its current City licence before signing.

Outdoor wood boilers face strict setbacks.

North Tonawanda’s zoning code allows outdoor wood-burning boilers only at least 50 feet from the building they serve and 200 feet from any other building, never in a front yard, and only from September 15 to May 31. They may burn only dry, seasoned, untreated wood and cannot be a home’s only heat source. Few city lots meet those distances, so an indoor stove or insert is the more practical option.

Answers before you request a quote

North Tonawanda wood stove installation FAQs.

Do I need a permit for a wood stove in North Tonawanda?

Plan on it. The City Building Department at 216 Payne Avenue issues building permits under the state code, and contractors must bring a signed contract and hold a City licence. There is no stove-specific form online, so call 716-695-8595 to confirm the permit, fee and inspections. Any electrical work for a blower needs a separate electrical permit.

Does North Tonawanda restrict wood smoke?

Its 1956 Smoke and Air Pollution chapter prohibits dense smoke and requires heating equipment in homes of fewer than five units to have efficient smoke-eliminating apparatus unless it burns a smokeless fuel such as gas or oil. Ask the Building Inspector how that applies to the stove you choose, and burn only dry, seasoned wood.

Is North Tonawanda the same as Tonawanda?

No. North Tonawanda is a city in Niagara County, north of the Erie Canal. The City of Tonawanda and the Town of Tonawanda are separate municipalities in Erie County with their own building offices and codes. This guide covers addresses inside the City of North Tonawanda only.
