Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Middletown.

Get the installation permit from Public Works at City Hall.

Inside the City of Middletown, the Department of Public Works regulates and inspects new construction through its Building Inspector, with code enforcement, plumbing, housing and fire inspectors. The Bureau of Fire Prevention’s page says installation permits for wood and pellet stoves are available at the DPW office on the second floor of City Hall, 16 James Street (DPW 845-343-3169). The City’s posted Application for Installation Permit, a 2011 form, asks for the owner, builder, a description of the work and its cost, and insurance carriers for workers’ compensation and liability, and says an Acord certificate is not acceptable. Ask DPW which form, fee and inspections apply to a stove or insert.

City of Middletown: Bureau of Fire Prevention

Outdoor wood furnaces are not an option in the city.

Middletown’s Common Council adopted Chapter 340 in 2009. It prohibits the construction and operation of outdoor woodburning furnaces within the City and required any unit already running to stop by December 31, 2009. Violations carry a fine of at least $250, and each day counts as a separate offense. The chapter covers outdoor furnaces that heat a building; it does not address indoor wood stoves or inserts, which go through the City’s installation permit instead.

Town of Wallkill addresses use the Town’s building office.

The Town of Wallkill wraps around the City of Middletown and is a separate municipality. Its Building & Code Enforcement office is at 99 Tower Drive, Building A, with a Middletown 10941 mailing address and its own building inspector (845-692-7807). If your Middletown address is outside City limits, the Town, not DPW at City Hall, handles your permit, and the City’s outdoor furnace ban does not apply. Check your tax bill before filing.

Downtown façade changes go to the Architectural Review Board.

Owners of buildings inside the downtown Business Improvement District must apply to Middletown’s Architectural Review Board before changing the structure or colour of a façade, adding windows or doors, or changing signs. The board meets at 10 am on the first Thursday of the month at City Hall. If a new chimney or through-wall vent would show on a downtown façade, ask the Office of Economic and Community Development whether ARB review applies before you order venting.

New installation, no chimney$5,500–$9,000+

What to ask a Middletown installer.

  1. Is my address in the City of Middletown or the Town of Wallkill, and which office will you file the permit with?
  2. Will you supply your workers’ compensation and liability carrier details on the forms the City accepts, not an Acord certificate?
  3. Does the stove need a City-licensed electrician for any blower or outlet work?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.

Will you save on heating?

There is no reliable single savings figure for every Middletown home. Backup comfort and financial payback are separate decisions. Compare all heating options

Answers before you request a quote

Middletown wood stove installation FAQs.

Do I need a permit for a wood stove in the City of Middletown?

Yes. The Bureau of Fire Prevention says installation permits for wood and pellet stoves are available at the DPW office on the second floor of City Hall, 16 James Street. The City’s posted installation permit form asks for the owner, builder, work description, cost and insurance carriers. Call DPW at 845-343-3169 to confirm the current form, fee and inspection steps.

Can I put an outdoor wood boiler in Middletown instead?

Not inside city limits. Chapter 340 of the City Code prohibits building or operating outdoor woodburning furnaces in Middletown and required existing units to shut down by the end of 2009, with fines of at least $250 a day. An indoor stove or insert installed under a City permit is the wood-heat route inside the city.

My mail says Middletown 10941. Is that the city?

Not necessarily. The Town of Wallkill surrounds the city, and its Building & Code Enforcement office at 99 Tower Drive uses a Middletown 10941 address. Town properties file with the Town’s building inspector, not the City’s DPW, and the City’s outdoor furnace ban does not apply there. Check your tax bill or ask the assessor which municipality you are in.
