Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Grand Island.

Grand Island Building Services issues the permit.

Grand Island’s Building Services Division, at 100 East First Street (308-385-5325), administers building and construction codes for the city and the two-mile extraterritorial area around it. Residential permits, including a ‘Mechanical Only’ type, are applied for online through the city’s Citizenserve portal, and the city says residential permits can take up to 15 working days. Adopted codes include the 2021 IRC and 2021 Uniform Mechanical Code with local amendments. The city’s pages do not name wood stoves, so ask which permit type covers a stove, insert or chimney and whether a licensed mechanical contractor must apply.

City of Grand Island: Building Services

Hiring an installer? Mechanical permits need a licensed fitter.

Grand Island City Code §18-69 requires a permit before new mechanical or HVAC installation work starts, says permits are issued only to a licensed master mechanical contractor or authorized journeyman mechanical fitter, and has all such work inspected by the city’s mechanical inspector. Permits expire 60 days after issue. The city also requires mechanical contracting companies and their fitters to be licensed with Building Services. Ask any installer for their city license before you buy.

Grand Island City Code, Division 18-III-6: Permit to Perform Mechanical Work

Check the contractor’s city license.

Grand Island Building Services says companies providing plumbing, mechanical, electrical and several other services must be licensed with the division to work in the Grand Island jurisdiction, and that mechanical fitters must be individually licensed as a master or journeyman, or registered as an apprentice, and work under a licensed company. Licensing and renewals run through the city’s online portal.

Keeping gas as backup heat? Ask about stand-by charges.

Grand Island City Code §18-1, which sets maximum NorthWestern natural gas rates in a schedule stated as effective August 1, 2001, adds a December–March stand-by charge for residential customers who use natural gas as backup to an alternative fueled heating system. If a wood stove becomes your main heat and the gas furnace the backup, ask the gas utility whether a stand-by charge applies today.

What to ask a Grand Island installer.

  1. Do you hold a Grand Island mechanical contractor license, and will you pull the permit and meet the mechanical inspector?
  2. Is my address inside Grand Island’s two-mile jurisdiction, and which permit type covers this stove and chimney?
  3. If I buy the stove from a retailer, will you install it and supply the liner or chimney system?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.

Will you save on heating?

Answers before you request a quote

Grand Island wood stove installation FAQs.

Can I pull my own permit for a wood stove in Grand Island?

Probably not if the city treats it as mechanical work. City Code §18-69 says mechanical and HVAC permits are issued only to a licensed master mechanical contractor or authorized journeyman fitter. Call Building Services at 308-385-5325 to confirm how it classifies a wood stove.

Does Grand Island’s permit office cover homes outside city limits?

Some. Building Services says its jurisdiction includes the city and the two-mile extraterritorial area around it, so addresses just outside city limits may still need a Grand Island permit and inspection. If you are farther out in Hall County, ask the county which rules and permits apply.

Are there burn bans for wood stoves in Grand Island?

We found none. Nebraska’s local air agencies are in Omaha, Douglas County and Lincoln-Lancaster County, and we found no Hall County or Grand Island rule that limits indoor wood burning. Burn dry, seasoned wood, keep the chimney clean, and have it inspected before the heating season.
