Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Bellevue.

Get a mechanical permit from Permits & Inspections.

Bellevue’s Permits and Inspections Division, 1510 Wall Street, says no structure in the city or its two-mile jurisdiction may be altered or improved without a permit, and that separate plumbing, mechanical and electrical permits are required; only portable heating appliances are listed as exempt mechanical work. The city adopted the 2021 International Mechanical Code (Ordinance 4034) and takes applications through its online portal. City Code 27-230 says mechanical permits are applied for by the licensed mechanical master doing the work. The pages do not name wood stoves or liners, so call 402-293-3014 to confirm what your stove or insert needs.

City of Bellevue: Building Permits

Nebraska bans open burning unless the fire chief permits it.

Bellevue City Code 12-173 notes the state open-burning ban (Neb. Rev. Stat. § 81-520.01) and lets the fire chief waive it by permit within Bellevue’s zoning jurisdiction. Section 12-176 limits outdoor fireplaces to untreated wood or approved starter logs, 15 feet from combustibles, on a non-combustible surface, and bars nuisance smoke. These rules cover outdoor fires; we found no Bellevue rule curtailing indoor stove use. That is not a guarantee.

Doing it yourself? Only in the home you live in.

Bellevue City Code 27-231 says no mechanical license is required of an individual installing or repairing the mechanical systems of the residence they live in, if the work meets code, the city is notified, a permit fee is paid and inspection is requested. It applies only to remodeling, additions and repairs, not new construction. A separate building-code section bars owners from pulling permits in their name for unlicensed contractors. Rentals you don’t live in need a licensed contractor.

Hiring from Omaha? Ask about a Bellevue license.

Bellevue City Code 27-230 says permits are applied for, signed and paid for by the licensed mechanical master associated with the firm. Under 27-229, the building official may issue a special one-job license to a mechanical master licensed in another city who shows proof of competency and a $300,000 insurance certificate. Ask an Omaha-based installer whether it already holds a Bellevue mechanical license or will need the special license.

Outside Bellevue’s jurisdiction? Sarpy County may issue it.

Sarpy County’s permit FAQ tells residents to check an online map to see whether they are in county jurisdiction, and lists Bellevue, Papillion, La Vista, Gretna and Springfield as separate permit offices. County permits are valid for one year, and construction must start within six months. If your address says Bellevue but sits beyond the city’s two-mile jurisdiction, confirm with the county.

Answers before you request a quote

Bellevue wood stove installation FAQs.

Can I install a wood stove myself in Bellevue?

Bellevue City Code 27-231 says you don’t need a mechanical license to install or repair mechanical systems in the home you live in, provided the work meets code, you notify the city, pay the permit fee and request inspection. It covers remodeling and repairs, not new construction. Call Permits & Inspections at 402-293-3014 before you start.

Can my Omaha installer work in Bellevue?

Bellevue requires mechanical permits to be applied for by a mechanical master licensed with the city. A master licensed in another city can ask the building official for a special license for one job, with proof of competency and insurance. Ask your installer which applies before you sign.

Do Omaha’s air-quality rules apply in Bellevue?

No. Omaha Air Quality Control and the Douglas County Health Department don’t cover Sarpy County; Nebraska’s state air program does. Bellevue’s own code limits outdoor fires to untreated wood and bars nuisance smoke. We found no rule limiting indoor stove use; choose an EPA-certified model and burn dry wood.
