Its wood products page offers wood stoves and wood inserts, and its service page says it installs the stoves, fireplaces and inserts sold in its Kalispell and Missoula stores. The pages don’t say whether installers are in-house or subcontracted, so ask who does the work, who pulls the Kalispell permit, and which wood models are EPA certified.

It mentions residential delivery with lift gate service but does not state installation, so treat it as a retailer and line up a separate installer.

Kalispell’s Building Department, part of Development Services at City Hall, 201 1st Avenue East, takes permit applications through the city’s online permit portal. City Code §5-4-2 adopts the 2021 International Residential and Mechanical Codes, as amended by the Administrative Rules of Montana, for all buildings in the city’s building code enforcement area. The current mechanical permit fee schedule is set by job valuation and has no line item for stoves, so ask which permit covers a wood stove, insert or chimney liner. The city says permits must be paid for and posted before work starts, and work found underway without one is charged double. Outside the enforcement area, ask Flathead County.
City of Kalispell: Permit Processes and PoliciesKalispell is inside the Kalispell City/County Air Pollution Control District, which covers the city limits and an extraterritorial area. Flathead County’s air rules set a voluntary curtailment program for solid-fuel burning devices in the control district during an Air Pollution Alert, declared when PM-10 levels exceed or are expected to exceed 100 micrograms per cubic meter, and the health department must inform the public. We found no mandatory burn ban and no limit on installing new wood stoves. Keep an eye on alerts in winter.
Flathead County Air Pollution Control Program regulations (PDF)Rule 401 of Flathead County’s air rules bars burning food waste, Styrofoam and other plastics, tires, asphalt shingles, tarpaper, insulated wire, treated lumber or railroad ties, colored newspaper or magazine print, chemicals and hazardous waste in any residential wood, coal or pellet stove or fireplace. It applies countywide, not only in Kalispell’s control district, so plan on seasoned firewood and plain kindling.
Flathead County Air Pollution Control Program regulations (PDF)Kalispell’s mechanical permit fee schedule, effective September 4, 2024, cites City Ordinance 1889: a required permit must be paid for, in hand and posted before any work begins. Work found underway without it is stopped and charged 200% of the original permit fee under city Resolution 5703. The owner or general contractor is responsible for checking that subcontractors have pulled their own permits.

Yes, as far as we found. Unlike Missoula’s air stagnation zone, Flathead County’s air rules don’t bar new wood stoves in Kalispell’s control district. They set a voluntary curtailment program for solid-fuel devices during Air Pollution Alerts. You still need a city permit, so confirm the permit type with the Building Department before you buy.
The county’s posted rules call the solid-fuel curtailment program voluntary: during an Air Pollution Alert the health department informs the public and asks for less burning. We found no mandatory burn ban for indoor stoves. Rules can change, so check Flathead County Environmental Health’s air quality page each winter.
Anderson’s Masonry Hearth & Home says it installs the stoves, inserts and fireplaces it sells from its Kalispell store. Obadiah’s Woodstoves sells wood stoves from a Kalispell showroom but does not state installation on its site. Ask any installer for the city permit and an EPA-certified model.
