Inside Raytown city limits, the Building Inspections Division of the Community Development Department (City Hall, 10000 E. 59th St.; 816-737-6014) reviews plans, issues permits and inspects work. The city says most improvements need a permit before work begins, including appliance installations or replacements, and that any work not listed as exempt in its adopted codes (2018 IRC, IMC and IFC) generally needs one. An owner may pull a permit only if they do the work, live there and hold title; otherwise a licensed contractor must. No city page names wood stoves, so ask which permit covers the stove, liner and chimney. Kansas City, Missouri addresses are a separate jurisdiction.
City of Raytown: Building PermitsThe city says the Raytown Fire Protection District is a separate governmental entity from the City of Raytown, and that depending on the scope of work, a separate permit and inspection may be required by the district. It asks applicants to contact the district directly at 816-737-6034. A city permit may not be the only sign-off for a new stove or chimney, so ask the district before work starts. In the city code we searched, we found no rule limiting indoor wood-stove use; that is not a guarantee.
City of Raytown: Fire District and UtilitiesRaytown says all mechanical contractors must be licensed by the city as masters of their trade. Its Craftsman License checklist (updated 07/16/2018) says the license must be associated with an active Contractor Business License and asks for ICC, Experior or Block & Associates test results, or a master certification from another jurisdiction, plus a $50.00 fee. The application lists the people authorized to pull permits under the license, so ask whether the person filing your stove permit is on it.
City of Raytown: New Craftsman License checklist and application (PDF)Raytown’s Schedule of Fees, amended effective November 1, 2024, prices mechanical permits by job value: $25.00 up to $500, $35.00 to $1,000, $50.00 to $5,000, then $50.00 plus $5 per $1,000. After the second inspection on the same permit, the city charges $30.00 an hour, and after-hours inspections (after 4:30 p.m. weekdays or on weekends) cost $45.00 an hour. Have the chimney ready before the final inspection to avoid a repeat visit.
City of Raytown: Schedule of Fees and Charges (effective Nov. 1, 2024, PDF)Raytown’s zoning code, Sec. 50-10, says chimneys projecting 36 inches or less are not obstructions in a required front, side or rear yard, provided they don’t interfere with the vision triangle, safe access or pedestrians. A new exterior chase for a wood stove that sticks out farther could run into setback rules, so ask Community Development before choosing an outside-wall chimney route.
Raytown Code Sec. 50-10, Permitted obstruction in required yards (municode)This is a planning guide, not a permit determination. The local authority and your installer must confirm current requirements for your property and appliance. We have not verified project-specific approvals or fees.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.

Not automatically. Raytown says all mechanical contractors must be licensed by the city as masters of their trade, and that every contractor needs a current Raytown business license, which is checked before a permit is issued. A contractor can qualify by showing a license from a jurisdiction Raytown recognizes or passing an approved exam. Ask your installer whether it already holds both.
It may. The city says the fire district is a separate government from the City of Raytown and that, depending on the work, a separate permit and inspection may be required by the district. It suggests calling the district at 816-737-6034. We could not confirm whether it reviews residential wood stoves, so ask before the stove goes in.
Only on your own home. Raytown lets an owner pull a permit only when all three conditions are met: you do the work yourself, you live on the property and you hold title. Otherwise a licensed contractor must obtain the permit and do the work. Either way, the city inspects the work, and the first two inspections on a permit carry no extra fee.
