Wood stove permits in Moorhead.

Moorhead Building Codes issues the mechanical permit.

Inside Moorhead, permits come from the city’s Building Codes office at 403 Center Avenue (218-299-5424), not from Fargo across the river. Its permit guide lists installing or replacing heating appliances among work needing a permit before construction starts. Submit the Mechanical Permit Application by email to BuildingCodes@moorheadmn.gov or in person, with plans and a cost estimate; mechanical fees are based on the job’s valuation plus a state surcharge. The city says no mechanical permit is issued before a building permit, so ask whether your stove or insert needs both. Call for inspections; don’t email them.

City of Moorhead: Building Permits

Leaf burning stops on air pollution alerts.

Moorhead Fire allows recreational fires without a permit if they stay 25 feet from buildings, burn only dry wood or charcoal and are attended, and it may order any fire out as a nuisance. Leaf burning is allowed only in the Oakport subdivision, by permit, and not during an air pollution alert, warning or emergency declared by the fire department. With January averaging about 8°F, burn dry, seasoned wood indoors too, so a new stove doesn’t smoke out the neighbours.

Doing it yourself? Only in your own home.

Moorhead says a homeowner-occupant may get a permit for construction on their own home without a contractor. Owners of other properties, such as rentals, may do some building work, but plumbing, mechanical and electrical improvements there must be done by a licensed, bonded contractor. An owner doing the work is responsible for meeting the same laws and codes as a contractor, and inspections still apply at the points Building Codes sets when the permit is issued.

Moorhead: When Do I Need a Building Permit

Hiring out? Check the state mechanical bond.

Minnesota has no state license for mechanical contractors, but the Department of Labor and Industry says businesses must file a $25,000 mechanical contractor bond before contracting for heating, fuel-burning or related work, and must also meet local licensing rules. Moorhead’s permit guide repeats that mechanical contractors must be bonded with the state. DLI’s page links a tool to check an existing bond, so ask an installer for its bond filing along with its permit plan.

Minnesota DLI: Mechanical contractor bond requirements

Mechanical fees follow job value.

Moorhead prices mechanical permits by the total valuation of the work, starting at $17 for jobs up to $500 and $38 for jobs from $501 to $1,000, with more added per $1,000 above that. A Minnesota surcharge of $0.50 per $1,000 of valuation is added. Starting work before a permit triggers an investigation fee equal to the permit fee, capped at $5,000. Put an accurate installed value on the application.

What to ask a Moorhead installer.

  1. Will you file Moorhead’s Mechanical Permit Application, and does my stove or insert also need a building permit first?
  2. Is your business bonded with Minnesota’s Department of Labor and Industry for heating and fuel-burning work, even though you’re based in North Dakota?
  3. Will the chimney or liner you specify handle long runs of sub-zero weather, and how will you size the stove for my room?

Answers before you request a quote

Moorhead wood stove installation FAQs.

Does a Fargo permit cover a stove in Moorhead?

No. Moorhead is in Minnesota, and the City of Moorhead’s Building Codes office at 403 Center Avenue issues permits for work inside the city. Its guide lists installing or replacing heating appliances among work that needs a permit, and mechanical permits are filed on the city’s own application. An installer based in Fargo or West Fargo still needs to apply to Moorhead.

Can I install a wood stove myself in Moorhead?

In a home you own and live in, Moorhead says you may get a permit and do the work without hiring a contractor, but you must meet the same codes and pass inspections. In a rental or other property you don’t live in, the city says mechanical improvements must be done by a licensed, bonded contractor.

What happens if the stove goes in before the permit?

Moorhead’s fee schedule charges an investigation fee equal to the permit fee whenever work starts before a permit is obtained, capped at $5,000, on top of the permit fee itself. Mechanical permit fees are based on the job’s valuation plus a state surcharge. Apply and get the permit before any installer begins work.
