Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Andover.

Andover Building Department issues the permit.

Inside Andover, permits come from the Building Department at City Hall, 1685 Crosstown Blvd NW (763-755-8700, building@andovermn.gov), which reviews applications and inspects residential work for compliance with state and city building and fire codes. Its ‘When Permits Are Required’ page lists solid fuel burning fireplace and stove installation among the jobs that need a permit and says work done without one may be fined and must be brought into compliance. The mechanical permit application lists fireplaces as a per-fixture residential item and says work must not start before the permit is issued. Ask staff which permit your stove or insert is filed under and which inspections follow.

City of Andover: when permits are required

Backyard fires: 3 by 3 feet, 25 feet back.

The Andover Fire Department allows recreational fires from noon to 1 a.m., for no more than three days in a row at one property. The fire must be in a ring or pit at least 25 feet from any structure, no larger than 3 by 3 feet, burn only clean, dry wood or charcoal, and stop when wind is 10 mph or more or a burning ban is in effect. Larger brush fires need a separate open burning permit. These rules cover outdoor fires, not an indoor stove.

Check your installer’s Andover license.

Andover says mechanical contractors doing heating, ventilation, gas fireplace installation and fuel piping must get a city mechanical contractor license and also register with the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry. Licenses run by calendar year, are not prorated and expire December 31. Applicants submit an insurance certificate, a workers’ compensation form and a mechanical bond certificate, and pay a $50 fee. The page names gas fireplaces, not wood stoves, so ask whether your installer’s license covers the job.

Ask which fireplace fee applies.

Andover’s mechanical permit application lists ‘Furnace, Fireplace, Air Conditioner’ and similar minor work at $95 per fixture plus a $1 state surcharge. The city’s 2026 permit fee sheet, revised February 2, 2026, lists an existing-residential mechanical permit at $90 per fixture plus surcharge and names gas fireplaces and gas inserts at $96, but does not mention wood. Ask the Building Department which line covers a wood stove or insert before you budget.

What to ask a Andover installer.

  1. Do you hold a current City of Andover mechanical contractor license, and will you pull the permit for solid-fuel stove installation before starting?
  2. Which Andover permit and fee line will my wood stove or insert go under, and will a blower need a separate electrical permit inspected by Tokle Inspections?
  3. Is the stove or insert you’re quoting EPA-certified to 2020 standards, and will you run a full-length liner sized to it?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.

Will you save on heating?

There is no reliable single savings figure for every Andover home. Compare your current heating cost with delivered dry wood, appliance efficiency, how much heat you will replace, maintenance, and the upfront installation. Backup comfort and financial payback are separate decisions. Compare all heating options

Answers before you request a quote

Andover wood stove installation FAQs.

Do I need a permit to put a wood stove in my Andover home?

Yes. Andover’s ‘When Permits Are Required’ page lists solid fuel burning fireplace and stove installation among the jobs that need a permit, and says unpermitted work may be fined and must be brought up to code. The Building Department at City Hall (763-755-8700) handles applications. Ask which permit type and fee apply, since the city’s forms name fireplaces but not wood stoves specifically.

Does my installer need an Andover license?

Possibly. Andover requires a city mechanical contractor license, renewed each calendar year, from contractors doing heating, ventilation and gas fireplace work, along with state registration. Its page names gas fireplaces rather than wood stoves, so ask the Building Department whether your job needs a licensed mechanical contractor, and ask your installer for its license, insurance certificate and bond.

Who inspects the wiring for a stove blower?

Andover’s Building Department lists electrical inspections separately, with Tokle Inspections named as the electrical inspector, and the city publishes its own electrical permit application. If your stove or insert has a blower or fan that is hard-wired, ask whether a separate electrical permit and inspection are needed in addition to the stove permit.
