Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Saginaw.

File a mechanical permit with Saginaw’s Inspections Division.

Inside Saginaw city limits, mechanical permits come from the Inspections Division at City Hall, 1315 S. Washington Ave. (989-759-1421). Its mechanical permit application, marked COS 6/23, lists ‘Solid Fuel Equip or gas fireplace’ at $40, a $75 application fee and a $100 refundable reinspection fee added to all applications; completed forms can be emailed to inspections@saginaw-mi.com for an invoice. The form says work must not start until the application is filed, nothing may be concealed before inspection, and installations must follow the State Mechanical Code. It also says the division enforces codes only within city limits, so confirm your address is in the city and not a surrounding township before applying.

Historic districts review exterior changes first.

Saginaw’s Historic District Commission, set up by city ordinance in 1987 after the county commission was eliminated, reviews any project that affects the outside appearance of a structure or its lot in the Heritage Square, Old Saginaw City or North Michigan Avenue districts. It meets the fourth Thursday of each month at 4:30 p.m. at City Hall. A new chimney, roof or wall flue or chimney cap on a house in one of these districts changes its outside appearance, so call city staff at 989-759-1540 before ordering a stove.

Historic applications are due early; the commission has 60 days.

Saginaw’s historic district permit review application, dated 6-1-2024, says completed applications go to the Inspections Department and are due no later than the Monday of the week before the commission meeting. Quoting Michigan’s Local Historic Districts Act, it says a permit cannot issue until the commission acts, and the commission has 60 calendar days after a complete application to decide. Staff can approve some projects without a hearing, so call first.

Doing it yourself? The affidavit applies.

The homeowner affidavit on Saginaw’s mechanical permit form says the work will be installed by the owner in the home they live in or are about to occupy, will follow the State Mechanical Code, and will not be covered up or put into operation until the city mechanical inspector approves it. The homeowner also takes responsibility for arranging inspections. For a rental or someone else’s home, a licensed contractor pulls the permit.

Permits lapse after six months without an inspection.

Saginaw’s mechanical permit instructions say a permit becomes invalid if work does not start within six months of issue or stops for six months, and is cancelled when no inspection is requested and carried out within six months of issue or of the last inspection. Cancelled permits cannot be refunded or reinstated. If a stove install stalls over a season, keep inspections moving or expect to reapply.

What to ask a Saginaw installer.

  1. Will you file Saginaw’s mechanical permit under the ‘solid fuel equipment’ line, and does your price include the application and reinspection fees?
  2. Is my house in Heritage Square, Old Saginaw City or the North Michigan Avenue district, and will a new chimney or flue need commission review first?
  3. Is my address inside Saginaw city limits or in a township, and which office will inspect the stove?

Answers before you request a quote

Saginaw wood stove installation FAQs.

Does Saginaw require a permit for a wood stove?

Saginaw’s mechanical permit application lists ‘Solid Fuel Equip or gas fireplace’ as a $40 fee item, on top of a $75 application fee and a $100 refundable reinspection fee. The form says mechanical work must not start until the application is filed with the Inspections Division at City Hall, 1315 S. Washington Ave. Confirm with the division that your stove or insert falls under that line.

Do I need historic approval for a stove in Saginaw?

Only if your property is in one of Saginaw’s local historic districts (Heritage Square, Old Saginaw City or North Michigan Avenue) and the work affects the outside appearance, such as a new chimney or roof flue. The Historic District Commission meets the fourth Thursday of each month, and a permit cannot issue until it acts. Staff may approve smaller projects.

My mailing address says Saginaw. Is the city my permit office?

Not necessarily. Saginaw’s mechanical permit form says its Inspections Division enforces codes within the city limits of Saginaw. Many homes with a Saginaw mailing address are in surrounding townships, which handle permits separately. Check your property record or call 989-759-1421 before applying.
