Wood stove permits in Port Huron.

Get a mechanical permit from Port Huron Building Inspection.

Inside city limits, the Building Inspection Division at 100 McMorran Blvd. issues building and separate mechanical permits; its FAQ says a permit is needed for all fireplaces and stoves. The mechanical application asks whether a building permit has been obtained, for the licensed mechanical contractor’s state ID and licence, and says work must not start until it is filed and must not be covered or used until inspected. Applications can be dropped off or emailed to evansk@porthuron.org, and paid by check or online. The Charter Township of Port Huron is a separate permit office, so check which one covers your address.

City of Port Huron: Building Inspection

Historic District homes need commission approval outside.

Port Huron’s Building Inspection page says any property in the Historic District must have Historic District Commission approval for any exterior work, and the commission reviews alterations before a permit can be granted. A new chimney, chase or roof vent is exterior work. The commission’s guidelines keep antennas, air conditioners and solar panels to the back roof, out of view from the street; ask the Building Department whether a stove vent is treated the same before you choose its location.

City of Port Huron: Historic District Commission

What the mechanical permit costs.

Port Huron’s mechanical permit application lists a $60 non-refundable application fee, solid fuel equipment (includes chimney) at $35, a separately installed factory-built chimney at $30, and rough or additional and final inspections at $55 each. Overlooked items and extra inspections are billed to the permit holder and must be paid before the final inspection. A one-time six-month extension costs $50, and there is a separate penalty fee for starting work before the permit is issued.

Doing it yourself means signing as the occupant.

The city mechanical application has a homeowner certification: you sign that the work will be installed by yourself in your own home in which you live or are about to live, to the State Mechanical Code, and that nothing will be covered or put into operation until the Mechanical Inspector approves it. The Building Inspection page adds that homeowners may pull permits only for their primary residence. Renters should ask the landlord to hire a licensed contractor.

City of Port Huron: permit FAQ (PDF)

Historic review runs on a monthly cycle.

The Historic District Commission meets on the second Tuesday of each month, and applications must arrive at least two weeks before the meeting or wait a month. A complete packet includes a building permit application, scaled plans, a materials list with spec sheets, a site plan, photographs of every side of the building and close-ups of the work area, and a $25 fee, filed with the Inspection Division. These guidelines date from 2014, so confirm current requirements.

What to ask a Port Huron installer.

  1. Will you file the City of Port Huron mechanical permit, not the township’s, and list the stove as solid fuel equipment including the chimney?
  2. Is my house in the Historic District, and if so will you prepare the drawings and photos the commission needs before ordering the stove?
  3. Since your shop is outside St. Clair County, how will you handle the rough and final inspections and any return trips?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.

Will you save on heating?

Answers before you request a quote

Port Huron wood stove installation FAQs.

Do I need a permit to install a wood stove in Port Huron?

Yes. The city’s permit FAQ says a permit is required for all fireplaces and stoves, and the mechanical application lists solid fuel equipment, including the chimney, at $35 plus a $60 application fee and a $55 final inspection. If the work changes walls or the roof, a building permit may also be needed. Call Inspection at 810-984-9733.

My home is in the Historic District. What extra step is there?

Port Huron requires Historic District Commission approval for any exterior work in the district, in addition to permits. A new chimney or roof vent counts. The commission meets the second Tuesday of each month; file at least two weeks ahead with plans, a materials list, photos of every side of the house and a $25 fee.

I rent in Port Huron. Can I install a stove myself?

No. Port Huron lets homeowners pull permits only if they are the registered legal owner and live in the house as their primary residence, and the homeowner certification on the mechanical form says the same. A tenant would need the landlord’s agreement and a licensed mechanical contractor to apply.
