Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Lansing.

File a mechanical permit with the Building Safety Office.

Inside Lansing city limits, the Building Safety Office at 316 N. Capitol Ave., Suite C-1, issues mechanical permits. Its current application (effective 07/01/2026) lists ‘Solid Fuel Equipment/Gas Fireplace (includes: chimney)’ and ‘Chimney, factory built (installed separately), B Vent, PVC Venting, Liner’ as separate items, and says work shall not start until the permit is issued unless the mechanical official approves. Inspections are requested online through BS&A. If work starts without a permit, the form says an investigation fee is charged on top of the permit fee. Lansing Charter Township and East Lansing issue their own permits.

Historic district? Expect a commission hearing.

Lansing’s Historic District Commission application says a Certificate of Appropriateness is required for any exterior work on a property in a local historic district. It asks for a site plan, photos or drawings, and manufacturer product pages, and says applicants, owners or their representatives must present their case at the scheduled commission meeting. A new chimney, stovepipe through a wall or roof, or chimney cap is exterior work. Call the Planning Office at 517-483-4048 before you schedule an installation.

Doing it yourself? Read the affidavit.

The homeowner’s affidavit on Lansing’s mechanical permit form applies only to a single-family residence and not to any home earning money or used commercially. The owner certifies they own and occupy it, or will within 30 days, and that the work will be done by them or their spouse under city ordinances and code. A false statement is described as a criminal misdemeanor. For a rental, the homeowner route is not available.

Hiring out? Ask about the city income tax.

The same Lansing permit form notes the city’s income tax: 1% for residents and 0.5% for non-residents performing work in the city, and says wages paid for labor under the permit are taxable income. This is the installer’s obligation, not a homeowner fee, but it is a Lansing-specific line on the form a contractor signs, so an out-of-town installer should already know about it.

Understand the full installed cost

Wood stove installation costs in Lansing.

U.S. planning ranges to prepare for a Lansing quote. They are national estimates, not measured Lansing averages or offers from listed businesses.

Freestanding wood stove$2,500–$7,500
Wood-burning insert$3,000–$8,000+
New installation, no chimney$5,500–$9,000+

What to ask a Lansing installer.

  1. Will you file the Lansing mechanical permit with both the solid-fuel equipment line and the chimney or liner line?
  2. If my house is in a Lansing historic district, will you attend the commission meeting or supply the product pages it asks for?
  3. Will you request the inspection through BS&A, and who meets the inspector?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.

Will you save on heating?

There is no reliable single savings figure for every Lansing home. Backup comfort and financial payback are separate decisions. Compare all heating options

Answers before you request a quote

Lansing wood stove installation FAQs.

Can I pull a Lansing permit and install a stove myself?

Only in narrow cases. The homeowner’s affidavit on the city’s mechanical form covers a single-family home you own and live in (or will within 30 days), with the work done by you or your spouse. It does not cover a home that earns money, such as a rental. Inspections are requested online through BS&A.

Does the Lansing permit cover the chimney?

The form’s solid-fuel equipment line says it includes the chimney, and a separate line covers factory-built chimneys installed separately, B vent, PVC venting and liners. Ask the Building Safety Office which lines apply if you are adding a liner to an existing masonry chimney.

What if I live in East Lansing or Lansing Township?

Those are separate jurisdictions. East Lansing and the Charter Township of Lansing run their own permit offices. The City of Lansing application and Historic District Commission described here apply only inside city limits.
