    Fireplace & Grill Shoppe

Retailer & showroom · 645 W. Michigan Avenue, Kalamazoo; says it serves Kalamazoo and Southwest Michigan
    Wood stovesWood insertsShowroom

Its wood stove and wood insert pages list Blaze King, Regency, Vermont Castings, Morsø, Jøtul and Stûv and invite quote requests. The pages do not say the shop installs wood appliances, and its chimney page refers sweeping to other firms, so treat it as a retailer and ask who would install, file Kalamazoo’s mechanical permit and fit the liner.

The Portage homepage lists wood and gas stoves and Hearthstone stoves among its products and names Kalamazoo in its service line; its About page traces the business to a 1977 wood-stove shop. The pages read did not describe wood stove installation, so ask whether it installs wood units in Kalamazoo and who pulls the city permit.

Wood stove permits in Kalamazoo.

File a mechanical permit with Community Planning & Economic Development.

Inside Kalamazoo city limits, Community Planning & Economic Development issues mechanical permits, online through BS&A or by form at 150 E. Crosstown Parkway, Suite B. The permit page names gas fireplaces and other heating work but not wood stoves; the application itself lists “Solid Fuel Equip. (includes chimney)” and a separate flue/liner item. Homeowners must be the owner on record and sign an affidavit that they live in, or are about to occupy, the home; rental work must be done by a licensed contractor. The city says review can take up to two weeks. Portage, Kalamazoo Township and other neighbours run separate offices, so confirm the address is inside the city.

City of Kalamazoo: Apply for a Mechanical Permit

Historic district? Get approval before the permit.

Kalamazoo has five local historic districts, and the city says exterior work there must be reviewed against its historic design standards. Building permits follow approval: the Historic Preservation Coordinator can approve most projects administratively, and a Certificate of Appropriateness is issued within 10 days of approval. A new exterior flue, chimney cap or rebuilt masonry chimney is visible work, so ask the coordinator at (269) 337-8804 whether your stove or insert project needs review before you file the mechanical permit.

Outdoor wood furnaces are a different case.

Kalamazoo’s outdoor furnace article requires a permit, bars units on condominium or platted-subdivision parcels and on parcels under three acres, requires 50-foot property-line and 350-foot neighbour setbacks, and forbids operation from April 15 through October 15. The definition excludes a device that heats only the structure it is in, so an indoor wood stove falls outside it; the article is a reason not to plan an outdoor boiler on a typical city lot.

Kalamazoo City Code Ch. 15, Art. II: Outdoor Furnaces

Doing it yourself? Read the affidavit and expiry rules.

The homeowner affidavit on Kalamazoo’s mechanical application says work may not be enclosed, covered or put into operation until the mechanical inspector approves it, and the homeowner must arrange inspections. The form also says a permit expires if no inspection is requested and conducted within six months of issue or of the last inspection, and expired permits cannot be refunded. Plans are not needed for one- and two-family homes with heating input of 375,000 BTU or less.

What to ask a Kalamazoo installer.

  1. Will you file Kalamazoo’s mechanical permit listing the solid-fuel equipment and the flue/liner items, and schedule the final inspection?
  2. If the house is a rental, is your installer a licensed contractor as Kalamazoo requires for rental mechanical work?
  3. If the house is in one of Kalamazoo’s historic districts, will you wait for historic approval before the permit and match the chimney cap or flue to the design standards?

Answers before you request a quote

Kalamazoo wood stove installation FAQs.

Does Kalamazoo require a permit for a wood stove or insert?

Yes. Kalamazoo’s mechanical permit application lists “Solid Fuel Equip. (includes chimney)” at $32 and a flue/liner at $6, on top of the $83 non-refundable application fee and $83 final inspection shown on the Rev. 7/26 form. Apply through BS&A online or at 150 E. Crosstown Parkway, and confirm current fees by calling 311 or (269) 337-8000.

Can I install the stove myself in Kalamazoo?

A homeowner can apply for a mechanical permit if they are the owner on record and sign the affidavit that the work is in a home they live in or are about to occupy. Rental property work must be done by a licensed contractor. Nothing may be covered or used until the mechanical inspector approves it.

Does Kalamazoo’s outdoor furnace ordinance affect an indoor wood stove?

No. The ordinance’s definition excludes a device that only heats the structure it sits in, so an indoor stove is handled through the mechanical permit. The ordinance does restrict outdoor wood boilers: no units on platted-subdivision or condominium lots, a three-acre minimum parcel, and no operation from April 15 through October 15.
