Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Grand Rapids.

Get a mechanical permit from the Development Center.

Inside Grand Rapids, the Development Center at 1120 Monroe Ave. NW issues residential mechanical permits. Its application lists solid-fuel equipment (wood or fireplace stoves) and factory-built chimneys or chimney liners as separate items. The city says a homeowner may apply for a primary single-family residence in person at the Development Center, while licensed contractors can apply online through Citizen Access, and properties with two or more units must use a licensed contractor. The application reviewed is marked 6.11.24, so confirm current fees. East Grand Rapids, Kentwood, Walker and Wyoming are separate cities with their own building offices.

Historic district? Get a Certificate of Appropriateness first.

Grand Rapids requires a Certificate of Appropriateness for additions, alterations, improvements and repairs affecting the exterior of property in a historic district or on a historic landmark. Depending on the project, city staff or the Historic Preservation Commission approves it, and the city’s steps put that approval before permitted work begins. A new chimney, a stovepipe through a roof or wall, or a changed chimney cap can count as exterior work; call the Planning Department at 616.456.4100 to learn which review path applies.

Backyard wood fires need their own permit.

Grand Rapids allows wood-burning recreational fires by permit only. The city notifies neighbors within 120 feet, who have 21 days to file written objections, and only seasoned dry firewood may be burned. This permit covers outdoor fires such as fire pits, not an indoor stove, which goes through the mechanical permit. If you plan both a stove and a backyard fire pit, expect two separate applications.

Homeowner work comes with an inspection promise.

The homeowner affidavit on Grand Rapids’ mechanical permit application certifies that the owner will do the work in the house they live in or are about to occupy, follow the current Michigan Mechanical Code, and not enclose, cover or operate the installation until the mechanical inspector approves it. The owner also takes responsibility for arranging inspections. The application is available in English and Spanish.

What to ask a Grand Rapids installer.

  1. Will you file the Grand Rapids mechanical permit for the stove and liner, or should I apply in person as the homeowner?
  2. If my house is in a historic district, will you wait for the Certificate of Appropriateness before exterior chimney work?
  3. Is your installation crew in-house, and does the quote include travel from your showroom?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.

Answers before you request a quote

Grand Rapids wood stove installation FAQs.

Can I pull the Grand Rapids permit myself?

The city says a homeowner of a single-family home may apply for a mechanical permit for a primary residence in person at the Development Center, and must sign an affidavit agreeing not to cover or operate the work until it is inspected. Properties with two or more units must use a licensed contractor. Online filing through Citizen Access is for licensed contractors.

Does the backyard fire permit cover an indoor stove?

No. The recreational fire permit covers outdoor wood-burning fires such as fire pits, and neighbors can object to it. An indoor stove or insert goes through the mechanical permit, whose application lists solid-fuel equipment separately. If you want both, expect two separate applications.

What if I live in East Grand Rapids, Kentwood or Wyoming?

Those are separate cities with their own building offices. The Development Center permit, the historic preservation rules and the recreational fire permit described here apply inside the City of Grand Rapids. The climate figure comes from a station in East Grand Rapids, but that does not make Grand Rapids rules apply there.
