Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in East Lansing.

Apply online to East Lansing’s Building Division.

Inside East Lansing city limits, including the part in Clinton County, permits come from the Building Division of the Department of Planning, Building and Housing at City Hall, 410 Abbot Road (517-319-6810), and all applications are now online. The division’s project chart says a new, replacement or repaired chimney needs detailed building plans stamped by a registered engineer or architect, a permit application and building review, and a furnace needs a permit. The mechanical fee list starts with a $60 non-refundable base fee and a required $70 final inspection. Neither names wood stoves, so ask which permits and plans your stove, insert or liner needs. The City of Lansing issues its own permits.

East Lansing: Who Do I Contact for My Building Project

Mostly renters: check whose decision it is.

ACS 2020–2024 estimates show about 62% of East Lansing households rent and only about 36% of homes are detached houses, reflecting the Michigan State University student market. A tenant cannot add a wood stove; the owner has to decide, pull the permit and account for rental licensing inspections. This guide is most useful for owner-occupants of detached houses and for landlords planning a permitted installation with a licensed contractor.

Historic districts: exterior work goes to the commission.

East Lansing adopted its Historic Preservation Code in 1989. The city says any exterior work on a structure in a historic district generally needs a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Historic District Commission, which holds a public hearing, so applications must be made at least a month ahead. Construction toward the rear, out of view from the street, is encouraged, and vinyl is generally not accepted. A new chimney, flue pipe or cap counts as exterior work.

Rental inspections look at clearances and firewood.

East Lansing’s rental inspection guidelines, dated 2013, say that without manufacturer’s installation requirements, solid-fuel heating equipment needs at least 3 feet of clearance from all storage. They also prohibit storing firewood outdoors unless it is covered and screened from view. Landlords adding a stove to a licensed rental should expect inspectors to check both, and tenants should keep boxes and furniture clear of the unit.

Mechanical fees include a required final inspection.

East Lansing’s mechanical permit fee list sets a $60 non-refundable application fee, $15 for each appliance vent not included in an appliance permit, and $35 for any appliance not covered by another category. A $70 final inspection is marked as required, re-inspections cost $70, and work found without a permit carries a $100 investigation fee. Ask the Building Division which lines apply to a wood stove or insert.

What to ask a East Lansing installer.

  1. Does my chimney or stove pipe need stamped plans under East Lansing’s permit chart, and who prepares them?
  2. If the house is in a historic district, will you supply drawings and product details for the Certificate of Appropriateness hearing?
  3. For a rental, will the installation meet the clearance items East Lansing’s rental inspectors check?

Answers before you request a quote

East Lansing wood stove installation FAQs.

Does Lansing’s permit office cover East Lansing?

No. East Lansing is a separate city with its own Building Division at 410 Abbot Road and its own online permits, fee list and Historic District Commission. That holds for the part of the city in Clinton County too. The City of Lansing and the Charter Township of Lansing run their own offices.

I rent in East Lansing. Can I add a wood stove?

Not on your own. Only the owner can apply for the permit, and rental homes are licensed and inspected by the city’s Rental Housing Division. Its inspection guidelines set a 3-foot storage clearance for solid-fuel heating equipment and bar uncovered, unscreened firewood outdoors. Talk to your landlord first.

Why is the climate figure from East Lansing 4 S?

The January normal on this page, 24.7°F, comes from NOAA’s 1991–2020 station East Lansing 4 S, about 5 miles from the city. A monthly average does not describe the coldest nights or how long a winter power outage might last.
