Inside city limits, Independence’s Building & Zoning office handles building and zoning permits, applied for through the city’s Citizen Portal; the building inspector is at 859-363-2947 and the zoning administrator at 859-363-2948. City of Independence: Building & ZoningKentucky’s Division for Air Quality lists Kenton County among eight counties where outdoor burning of household rubbish, brush, tree limbs, leaves and land-clearing debris is not allowed from May 1 to September 30. Small wood fires for warmth and cooking are generally allowed statewide except during a declared fire emergency, and treated or painted wood may never be burned outdoors. The rules cover outdoor burning, not indoor stoves, but they matter when you clear brush or dispose of scrap wood.
Kentucky Division for Air Quality: open burningIndependence’s HVAC Requirements handout says HVAC permits are issued only to licensed master HVAC contractors, except homeowner permits. An owner installing a system in their own legal residence must apply before starting, file an affidavit, show proof of adequate sizing and a design plan, follow the Kentucky Residential Code, and personally perform all work. If a stove is permitted as HVAC here, a hired installer should supply a master number.
