Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Topeka.

Topeka Development Services issues building and trade permits.

Topeka’s Development Services Division issues building permits and separate trade permits for plumbing, electrical and mechanical work, through its Permit/Licensing Portal or the Trades Permits and Inspection office on the 3rd floor of the Holliday Building. Trade permits go only to homeowners and licensed trade contractors. Under TMC 14.10.020, an unlicensed owner who lives in an existing single-family home may get a permit for work they do themselves, must submit plans for approval and must pass all inspections. The pages we read do not name wood stoves, so ask Development Services (785-368-3905) which permit covers the stove, liner and chimney. Addresses outside city limits should confirm who issues permits.

City of Topeka: Skilled Trades permits

Topeka’s burn permits are for outdoor fires, not indoor stoves.

Topeka requires an annual burning permit for any open burning in the city, bars residential burning within 50 feet of a structure, and asks permit holders to call the Burn Status hotline (785-368-4403) before burning. These rules cover outdoor fires. We found no Topeka or Shawnee County rule limiting indoor wood-stove use on poor-air days, but that is not a guarantee; ask the city before relying on a stove.

City of Topeka: Burn permits

Topeka sets its own chimney flue-size rule.

Topeka adopted the 2021 International Residential Code with local amendments. One replaces IRC section R1003.14: a chimney flue may not be smaller in area than the connector from the appliance, and a flue serving more than one appliance must be sized under the currently adopted Uniform Mechanical Code. If a stove or insert will share an existing chimney with a furnace or water heater, ask the installer how the flue was sized.

Topeka Municipal Code 14.55.630: Flue area (appliance)

Historic landmark or district? Get a certificate first.

Topeka says no local historic landmark or contributing feature may be altered without an approved certificate of appropriateness. Preservation staff decide minor projects, generally within 30 days of a complete application; major projects go to the Topeka Landmarks Commission, with mailed notice to neighbors. A new chimney, flue or roof penetration on a listed home may count, so contact Planning staff before the installer orders parts.

Topeka Municipal Code 18.255.110: Certificate of appropriateness review

This is a planning guide, not a permit determination. The local authority and your installer must confirm current requirements for your property and appliance. We have not verified project-specific approvals or fees.

New installation, no chimney$5,500–$9,000+

What to ask a Topeka installer.

  1. Do you hold a City of Topeka trade license, and will you pull the mechanical or building permit for the stove, liner and chimney?
  2. Will the stove share a flue with another appliance, and how will you size it under Topeka’s flue-area amendment?
  3. Is my home a Topeka landmark or in a local historic district, and does the chimney or roof work need a certificate of appropriateness?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.

Answers before you request a quote

Topeka wood stove installation FAQs.

Do I need a permit to install a wood stove in Topeka?

Plan on it. Topeka’s Development Services Division issues building permits plus separate mechanical, plumbing and electrical trade permits. The pages we read do not name wood stoves, so call 785-368-3905 or check the Permit/Licensing Portal and ask which permit covers the stove, liner and chimney.

Can I install a stove myself in Topeka?

Topeka lets an unlicensed owner get a permit for work on an existing single-family home they own and live in, if they do the work themselves, submit plans for approval and pass every inspection. The owner pays for correcting any deficient work. Anyone else doing trade work must hold a City of Topeka license.

Does Topeka have no-burn days for wood stoves?

We found none for indoor stoves. Topeka’s burn permit and Burn Status hotline apply to outdoor open burning. That is not a guarantee, so check with the city and Shawnee County before relying on a stove, and follow the installer’s instructions for your model.
