Confirm the permit type and inspections before you buy.

The exemption does not apply if the owner has open owner permits at another address, or a certificate of occupancy from one in the past 12 months. Everyone else needs a licensed solid-fuel appliance contractor.

Only in limited cases. The code exempts an owner working on the single-family home they occupy as their exclusive dwelling, who buys and installs all materials, unless they have open owner permits elsewhere or used the exemption at another address within 12 months. Otherwise the installer must hold a city solid-fuel license, which requires NFI woodburning and pellet exams.
Salina’s code defines solid-fuel appliance installations as permanent wood, coal, corn or pellet appliances and says they are limited to listed, factory-built appliances. A homemade or unlisted stove would not fit that definition. Bring the stove’s listing label and installation manual when you apply, and ask Building Services before buying a used unit.
