Inside Lenexa city limits, Community Development’s Licensing & Permitting office at City Hall, 17101 W. 87th St. Pkwy., issues building permits (913-477-7725, permits@lenexa.com). The city says any remodeling or construction relating to framing, electrical, mechanical or plumbing needs a permit, applied for through its Application and Permitting Portal, with residential reviews taking five business days. Lenexa’s adopted codes include the 2018 International Residential, Mechanical and Fuel Gas Codes. No city page we read names wood stoves or inserts, so ask which permit covers the stove, liner and chimney. Olathe, Overland Park and Shawnee issue their own permits.
City of Lenexa: Remodeling ProjectsLenexa lets one- and two-family homes use wood fire pits and portable outdoor fireplaces without a permit if the fire is contained, covered by a spark screen, no more than 2 feet high and 3 feet across, at least 15 feet from structures and burning only traditional firewood. The fire chief may temporarily prohibit recreational burning when weather warrants. These rules cover outdoor fires; we found no Lenexa rule on indoor stove use, but that is not a guarantee.
City of Lenexa: Fire Pits and GrillsLenexa says that unless the homeowner is doing the work at the home they occupy, every subcontractor must have a current City of Lenexa business license and a Johnson County Contractor’s License on file with the city before a building permit is issued. Ask your stove installer, and anyone running gas or electrical work, for both before you sign. Licensing & Permitting (913-477-7725) can answer questions about a contractor’s licensing.
City of Lenexa: Remodeling ProjectsLenexa building permits are valid for 180 days, and each approved inspection extends the permit another 180 days; permits for single-family homes also expire two years after issuance. Letting a permit lapse can bring a reinstatement fee before more inspections. Starting work without a permit brings an investigation fee equal to the permit fee. If a stove install stalls, book an inspection before the 180 days run out.
City of Lenexa: Residential ConstructionJohnson County’s burning-ban listing shows the City of Lenexa fire department issues no burning permits during April; burn permits at other times come from the department at 913-477-7990. This affects yard-waste and other open burning, not an indoor stove, but it shows the county watches spring air closely. Plan any outdoor cleanup burning around it.
Johnson County: Burning BansThis is a planning guide, not a permit determination. The local authority and your installer must confirm current requirements for your property and appliance. We have not verified project-specific approvals or fees.

Expect one. Lenexa says any remodeling or construction that relates to framing, electrical, mechanical or plumbing needs a building permit, applied for through its online portal, with a five-business-day residential review. No city page we read names wood stoves, so call Licensing & Permitting at 913-477-7725 to confirm the permit type.
Lenexa’s permit steps assume a contractor unless the homeowner is doing the work at the home they occupy. If you act as your own contractor, the city says your inspections must be scheduled by phone, not online. The work still needs a permit and must pass inspection.
The limits we found are for outdoor fires. Lenexa’s fire department issues no burn permits in April, and fire pits must be screened, small and 15 feet from structures; the fire chief can suspend recreational burning in bad weather. We found no rule on indoor stoves, but that is not a guarantee.
