Its site describes a Davenport showroom with gas and wood burning stoves and gas and wood inserts. It says it offers installation, repair and maintenance on the brands it sells and follows national and local building codes. Ask which wood models are in stock, whether its crew or a subcontractor does the chimney or liner work, and who holds the Davenport mechanical license for the permit.

Davenport City Code 15.08.300 (amended 11-13-2024) says fireplaces, heating stoves and other heating construction need a mechanical permit. The city’s permit guidance says building, mechanical, plumbing and electrical work is generally done by a licensed and bonded contractor who takes out the permit for the owner. Owners of a single-family home may do some construction themselves, but the city says that exception does not apply to mechanical installations. Development & Neighborhood Services runs the Building Counter at the Public Works Center, 1200 E 46th Street. Ask your installer to confirm they hold a Davenport mechanical license and will pull the permit. Addresses in Bettendorf, LeClaire or rural Scott County are handled elsewhere.
City of Davenport: What does/does not require a permit?Davenport’s fire code chapter allows open burning of clean wood, meaning trunk and branch wood, not lumber, plywood, stumps or roots. It adds that the city does not encourage burning wood and will pick up tied bundles of branches at the curb. Leaves, garbage and building materials may not be burned. None of this restricts an indoor stove, but it is a reason to burn only dry, untreated firewood. Iowa DNR recommends EPA-certified stoves and inserts.
Davenport City Code ch. 15.32, International Fire Code (ecode360)Davenport City Code 14.01.060 requires a certificate of appropriateness from the Historic Preservation Commission for work needing a building permit that would change the exterior of a local landmark or a building in a designated historic district. It must be obtained before work starts. A new exterior chimney or visible flue could fall under this. The Commission meets on the second Tuesday of each month, so build that time into your schedule.
Davenport City Code Title 14, Historic Preservation (ecode360)Scott County Planning & Development handles land use and building permits for unincorporated Scott County. Under intergovernmental agreements it also serves eight small cities, including LeClaire, Long Grove, Panorama Park and Riverdale. Davenport is not on that list and issues its own permits. If your mailing address says Davenport but you live outside city limits, check with the county before hiring.

Probably not. Davenport lets owners of a single-family home do some construction and remodeling without a contractor license, but its permit guidance says that exception does not apply to mechanical installations. City code puts heating stoves under the mechanical permit, so plan on a licensed contractor taking it out.

Rock Island, Moline and East Moline are in Illinois, which has different state guidance and local codes. Confirm your jurisdiction before you ask for quotes.
We found no indoor wood-burning curtailment or EPA-certification requirement for Davenport or Scott County. Iowa DNR recommends EPA-certified stoves and inserts and says never to burn garbage, plastics or treated wood. Davenport’s outdoor burning rules allow only clean trunk and branch wood.
