Wood stove permits in Noblesville.

Apply to Noblesville Planning and Development.

Inside Noblesville city limits, the Department of Planning and Development at 16 S. 10th Street (317-776-6325) handles plan review, inspections and building-code enforcement, and all applications go through the city’s online permit portal. Its residential permit guide says work involving mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC or structural alteration needs a permit, with a construction plan as the submittal. The guide does not name wood stoves, so ask which permit covers your stove, liner or new chimney. Carmel, Fishers and Westfield run their own offices, and homes with a Noblesville mailing address outside city limits may fall to the Hamilton County Plan Commission.

Outdoor fires need a Noblesville burn permit.

Noblesville’s open-burning ordinance bans burning trash, yard waste, leaves and construction materials in the city. Recreational and cooking fires are allowed only with the Fire Chief’s prior approval, meaning a free Open Burn Permit kept on site: a Standard permit from any fire station for occasional fires, or an Annual permit after a burn-site inspection. Only wood products may burn, 25 feet from structures, and not during inversions, high winds or stagnant air. These rules cover outdoor fires, not a vented indoor stove.

Outside city limits? Call the county.

The Hamilton County Plan Commission, at 9615 E. 148th Street in Noblesville (317-776-8490), covers unincorporated areas on its jurisdiction map and publishes zoning maps for parts of Noblesville and Wayne townships. There, it says only window and door replacement, interior decorating, exterior painting and shingle replacement are exempt from building permits. A stove installed outside city limits would go through the county, so check the map before applying to the city.

Remodel fees and a costly missed inspection.

Noblesville’s fee schedule, marked effective September 1, 2019, lists residential remodeling at $125 plus 10 cents per square foot and says that fee covers installation or renovation work including central heating. It also lists a $500 residential missed-inspection fee and $200 for reinspection. Confirm current fees with Planning and Development, and make sure someone is home when the inspector is scheduled.

No city contractor register to check.

Unlike neighbouring Carmel and Fishers, Noblesville’s permit FAQ says the city does not require any contractor to be registered or licensed, though a contractor must be named on the application and subcontractors listed. That FAQ is written for commercial permits, so confirm how it applies to a house. Without a city register, ask installers directly for insurance and certification details.

What to ask a Noblesville installer.

  1. Is my address inside Noblesville city limits or under the Hamilton County Plan Commission, and who will you apply to?
  2. Which Noblesville permit category will you file the stove, liner and any new chimney under?
  3. Who will be on site for inspections, given Noblesville’s listed missed-inspection fee?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Answers before you request a quote

Noblesville wood stove installation FAQs.

Does the city or Hamilton County issue my permit?

Inside city limits, Noblesville’s Department of Planning and Development issues permits through its online portal. The Hamilton County Plan Commission covers unincorporated areas on its jurisdiction map and publishes zoning maps for parts of Noblesville and Wayne townships, so a Noblesville mailing address does not settle it. Check the county map or call either office before applying.

Do I need a permit for a backyard fire pit in Noblesville?

Yes. Noblesville’s ordinance requires the Fire Chief’s prior approval for recreational and cooking fires, issued as a free Open Burn Permit. Occasional burners get a Standard permit at any fire station; frequent burners can get an Annual permit after a burn-site inspection. Only wood products may be burned, 25 feet from structures.

Does my installer need to be registered with Noblesville?

Noblesville’s permit FAQ says the city does not require contractors to be registered or licensed, though the contractor is named on the application. That FAQ is written for commercial projects, so confirm with Planning and Development for a house. Carmel and Fishers do run contractor registration, so rules differ across Hamilton County.
