Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Muncie.

Apply to the Muncie Building Commissioner’s Office.

Inside city limits, permits come from the City of Muncie Building Commissioner’s Office at City Hall, 300 N. High Street (765-747-4862), and applications can be filed in person, by mail or by email. Its forms page says HVAC, electrical and plumbing permits cannot be pulled by a homeowner, only by a contractor licensed or registered in Muncie. The city’s plumbing, heating, electrical and refrigeration permit sheet asks for the number and type of units and an attached copy of the job estimate. None of these name wood stoves, so ask whether your stove, insert or chimney is a heating permit, a building permit or both.

City of Muncie: Permitting Forms & Applications

Burn bans stop outdoor fires, not indoor stoves.

Muncie’s code bars open burning during high winds, temperature inversions, stagnant air, pollution alerts, ozone action days or very dry weather, and lets the fire chief declare an open burning ban through local radio, TV and news outlets. During a ban, only fires in indoor heating units or outdoor gas grills are permitted. A properly vented stove can keep running, but yard and brush fires cannot.

Muncie Code Sec. 91.30 (Municode)

Hiring out? Ask for the Muncie HVAC license.

Muncie’s code requires a city heating and cooling contractor license to install, replace or repair heating systems or space heating equipment. The city’s application asks for a $5,000 surety and at least $500,000 of liability insurance naming the city, and applicants appear before the HVAC Review Board, which meets the first Monday of each month. New licenses cost $150 and renewals $100, and all expire December 31. Ask your installer for its license.

Doing it yourself needs written approval.

Muncie’s code lets an owner who lives on the property do licensed heating work on a one- or two-family home without a license, but only after getting any required permit and, after submitting full plans, written approval from the heating board or the building commissioner, based on whether the owner has the skill to do it to code. The city’s forms page separately says homeowners cannot pull HVAC permits, so ask before planning a DIY stove.

Muncie Code Sec. 153.60 (Municode)

Outside city limits, the county issues permits.

Delaware County’s permit jurisdiction page says building, electrical, plumbing and sign permits inside Muncie come from the city Building Commissioner at 300 N. High Street, while unincorporated Delaware County is handled by the county Building Commissioner at 100 W. Main Street, Room 206 (765-747-7799). A Muncie mailing address does not always mean city limits, so check which office covers your parcel.

What to ask a Muncie installer.

  1. Do you hold a current City of Muncie heating and cooling license, and will you pull the permit for this stove or insert?
  2. Is my address inside Muncie city limits or in unincorporated Delaware County, and which Building Commissioner will inspect it?
  3. Does your quote include a stainless liner and the job estimate Muncie’s permit sheet asks for?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.

Muncie wood stove installation FAQs.

Can I pull my own stove permit in Muncie?

Probably not without extra steps. Muncie’s forms page says HVAC permits can only be pulled by a licensed or registered contractor. City code does let an owner-occupant of a one- or two-family home do heating work after getting any required permit and written approval from the heating board or building commissioner. Can I use my wood stove during a Muncie burn ban?

Yes. Muncie’s ordinance says that during an open burning ban declared by the fire chief, only fires in indoor heating units or outdoor gas grills are permitted. Outdoor brush, leaf and recreational fires must stop, and open burning is also barred on pollution alert and ozone action days.
