Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Indianapolis.

Heating work needs a DBNS permit.

In the consolidated City of Indianapolis, the Department of Business and Neighborhood Services (DBNS) issues residential permits. Its Class 2 permit page says any construction activity related to a heating, venting, air conditioning or refrigeration system requires a permit, apart from narrow exceptions such as extending ductwork. It does not name wood stoves, so ask DBNS whether your stove, liner and chimney fall under the heating and cooling permit, a structural permit, or both. indy.gov lists Lawrence, Speedway, Beech Grove and Southport as excluded cities in Marion County; if your property is in one, confirm who issues permits there.

Watch for Knozone Action Days.

The Office of Sustainability calls Knozone Action Days when ozone or fine particles reach levels unhealthy for sensitive groups or worse. Its particle-pollution tips include reducing fireplace use even when it is cold, because wood-burning fireplaces add PM2.5, and it states open burning is illegal in Marion County. The fireplace advice is presented as a tip, not a ban; sign up for SmogWatch alerts if you plan to heat with wood.

DIY install? Plan for the homeowner exam.

The DBNS Homeowner’s Building Permit Guide says homeowners may take an exam which, once passed, lets them apply for electrical, plumbing or HVAC permits; otherwise a licensed electrician or mechanical contractor must pull them. It lists rough-in and final mechanical inspections. The guide’s file dates to 2019–2020, so confirm the current exam process with DBNS before planning a self-installation.

Historic district? Get a COA before work.

The Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission provides design review for locally designated historic districts, conservation areas and individually designated properties across Marion County, and asks owners to apply for a Certificate of Appropriateness before starting work. Staff review certain exterior work. A new chimney or flue through a roof or wall is exterior work; check the IHPC district map before scheduling installation.

Chimney crown repair isn’t a stove install.

The DBNS homeowner guide lists exterior repair or renovation of a masonry chimney above the roofline, if it does not reduce the flue opening, among work exempt from building permits. That exemption does not cover installing a stove, insert, liner or new venting, which is heating-system work. The guide dates to 2019–2020, so confirm the exemption with DBNS for your project.

What to ask a Indianapolis installer.

  1. Is a licensed mechanical contractor pulling the DBNS heating permit, or am I expected to?
  2. Is my address in the consolidated city or in Lawrence, Speedway, Beech Grove or Southport?
  3. If the house is in an IHPC district, does your schedule allow for a Certificate of Appropriateness?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.

Indianapolis wood stove installation FAQs.

Can I burn wood on a Knozone Action Day?

The Knozone page presents reducing fireplace use as a tip for particle-pollution days, not a stated ban on indoor stoves. It does say open burning is illegal in Marion County, which covers outdoor fires. If you rely on a stove for backup heat, follow current guidance and burn dry wood in a properly installed appliance.

What does “Indianapolis city (balance)” mean for my permit?

Indianapolis and Marion County are consolidated, and DBNS issues permits for the consolidated city. The Census “balance” figure leaves out other incorporated places in the county, including the excluded cities. indy.gov lists Lawrence, Speedway, Beech Grove and Southport as excluded cities; contact that city if your property lies in one.

Does chimney repair need a permit in Indianapolis?

The DBNS homeowner guide exempts exterior repair of a masonry chimney above the roofline that does not reduce the flue opening. Installing a stove, insert or liner is different: indy.gov says any construction activity related to a heating or venting system requires a permit. Confirm your project with DBNS.
