Its stoves page lists Forge & Flame wood stoves and its service-area page names Urbana. The site offers ‘installation support’ and talks about installation options, but does not clearly say its own crews install wood stoves. Ask whether it installs in Urbana or refers you to an installer, and who files the city permit.

Urbana’s Building Safety Division, part of Community Development Services, takes applications for building, mechanical, electrical and plumbing permits through an online portal. You need an email address to register; staff email you when the permit is approved, and you can then pay online. The city has adopted the 2021 International Residential Code and 2021 International Mechanical Code, with local changes in an adopting ordinance. The division lists a plumbing/mechanical inspector, and inspectors work weekdays 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Call 217-384-2443 to ask which permit covers a wood stove, insert, liner or new chimney and which inspections apply.
City of Urbana: Apply for a PermitUrbana’s Planning Division says that, as of March 2024, the city had 20 properties designated as local historic landmarks, including the Nathan Ricker House and the Urbana Lincoln Hotel, plus three local historic districts: Buena Vista Court, the Joseph Royer District and the 800 block of West Main Street. Another 28 properties are on the National Register of Historic Places. If your home is on the local list, plan for review before changing a chimney.
City of Urbana: Local Historic Landmarks and DistrictsUrbana defines a Certificate of Appropriateness as approval of plans to alter a designated landmark or a structure in a designated historic district. Applications go to the Planning Division at 400 South Vine Street or Planning@UrbanaIL.gov, with the fee in the city’s schedule of fees. The city strongly recommends, and sometimes requires, talking with planning staff first. A new flue or chimney on a landmark is the kind of exterior change to raise early.
City of Urbana: Historic Preservation ApplicationUrbana lists the 2021 International Residential Code, 2021 International Mechanical Code and 2021 International Fire Code among its adopted codes, with local changes collected in one adopting ordinance. The city notes that codes can be read free at City Hall. Ask your installer to confirm stove clearances, hearth protection and chimney height against these editions and the stove’s listing.

Not directly. This guide is for owners of houses inside Urbana city limits. A renter would need the landlord to decide on, install and permit any stove, and university housing is managed by the university. Owners in Savoy, Champaign or unincorporated Champaign County should check with that local office instead.
Both are local historic districts. Urbana requires a Certificate of Appropriateness for alterations to structures in designated districts and to local landmarks. Talk to the Planning Division (217-384-2440) before you order a stove that needs a new visible flue or chimney.
We found no indoor wood-burning restriction in Urbana. Illinois EPA says woodstoves are not prohibited in the state, but fuel and operation are limited to what the manufacturer specifies. A permit, inspection and code compliance still apply to the installation.
