Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Skokie.

Apply to Skokie Building & Inspection Services.

Inside the village, permits come from Skokie’s Building & Inspection Services Division (847-933-8223, building@skokie.org), and applications go through the Village’s online permit portal. The Village says both the homeowner and the contractor must sign the forms, that all contractors must be licensed and bonded, and that inspection requirements are listed on the permit placard, which is displayed in a street-facing window. Final inspection requests must be made in writing. Skokie’s permit lists name furnaces and heating units but not wood stoves, inserts or chimneys, so ask the division which permit type covers your stove, liner or new chimney before you apply.

Village of Skokie: How to Apply for a Building Permit

Outdoors, Skokie allows only built-for-purpose fires.

Skokie’s code makes it unlawful to burn wood, leaves, branches or other combustibles anywhere in the village, with two exceptions. Burning is allowed inside a building in a fireplace or facility built for that purpose. Outdoors, a fire is allowed only in a raised, commercially made fireplace or cooking unit of brick, stone or metal, burning charcoal, propane, dry seasoned firewood or commercial logs, with an adult attending it. Dry, seasoned wood is the right fuel indoors too.

Skokie Village Code Sec. 50-44 (Municode)

Hiring out? Check the village registration.

Skokie requires every contractor doing work that needs a building permit to register with the Village each year and to submit proof of commercial general liability insurance with the fee. The registration lasts 12 months; the code lists $50 for heating contractors and mason contractors and $100 for general contractors, and says the Village makes no representation about a registered contractor’s work. Ask your installer which registration it holds.

Skokie Village Code Sec. 46-134 (Municode)

Mechanical permit fees and the 2021 code.

Skokie has adopted the 2021 International Mechanical Code as its mechanical code, and its fee code sets mechanical permit fees at a $75 base fee plus $50 for heating equipment installation. Whether a wood stove or insert is billed as heating equipment, and whether a building permit is also needed for a new chimney or hearth, is something to confirm with the Building & Inspection Services Division.

Skokie Village Code Sec. 46-128 (Municode)

Cook County air rules: stoves in small buildings are exempt.

Cook County’s Environmental Control Ordinance applies everywhere in the county except Chicago, so it covers Skokie. Sec. 30-151 requires an equipment registration permit before installing fuel-burning equipment or a chimney, but exempts domestic heating plants, defined to include stoves serving a single-family home, a duplex, or a building with fewer than three apartments. For a stove in a larger apartment or condo building, ask the county first.

What to ask a Skokie installer.

  1. Which Skokie permit will you pull for this stove or insert, and will you sign the application with me as the Village requires?
  2. Do you hold a current Skokie contractor registration as a heating or mason contractor, with liability insurance on file?
  3. Is this a single-family home, duplex or small building covered by Cook County’s domestic heating exemption, or do we need to ask the county?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Answers before you request a quote

Skokie wood stove installation FAQs.

Who issues a wood stove permit in Skokie?

Skokie’s Building & Inspection Services Division at Village Hall, 5127 Oakton Street (847-933-8223). Applications go through the Village’s permit portal, both the owner and contractor sign, and inspections are listed on the permit placard. The permit pages do not name wood stoves, so ask which permit type fits before you apply.

Can I burn wood outdoors in Skokie?

Only in a raised, commercially made outdoor fireplace or cooking unit of brick, stone or metal, using charcoal, propane, dry seasoned firewood or commercial logs, with an adult attending. Skokie’s code otherwise bans burning wood, leaves and other combustibles anywhere in the village, except inside a building in a fireplace or unit built for it.

Does Cook County need to approve a Skokie wood stove?

Usually not for a house. Cook County’s air ordinance covers Skokie and requires an equipment registration permit for fuel-burning equipment and chimneys, but exempts domestic heating plants, including stoves in single-family homes, duplexes and buildings with fewer than three apartments. Larger multi-unit buildings should check with the county.
