Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Des Plaines.

Apply through Des Plaines’s permit portal.

Inside Des Plaines, building permits come from Community and Economic Development at City Hall, 1420 Miner St., and are applied for online through the city’s Customer Self Service portal. The city’s pages do not name wood stoves, so email permits@desplainesil.gov or call 847-391-5380 to confirm the permit type. Since January 1, 2026 the city enforces the 2021 International Residential and Mechanical codes with local amendments. The fee code lists new HVAC/mechanical work at 1.5% of value (minimum $75) and alterations at 1.75% (minimum $50). Inspections are requested at 847-391-5382.

Des Plaines Building and Permits

Des Plaines limits smoke from home heating equipment.

Des Plaines’s air pollution chapter declares annoying or harmful smoke, soot or fly ash a public nuisance. It prohibits smoke denser than No. 1 on the Ringelmann chart from home heating and hot-water equipment in single-family residences at all times, and those homes do not get the short allowance other sources have while starting a fire. Burn dry, seasoned wood in a certified stove and ask the installer how to avoid a smoky start-up.

Hiring out? Check the city contractor registration.

Des Plaines requires contractors working in the city to register through its Customer Self Service portal, and registrations expire every December 31. General contractors and ‘other’ contractors such as HVAC and masons pay a registration fee; plumbers need a State of Illinois license. A homeowner serving as their own contractor does not register but may need letters of responsibility. Ask your installer for its current Des Plaines registration.

Outdoor fires: recreation and cooking only.

Des Plaines prohibits open burning of paper, garbage, leaves, clippings and other combustible material. It allows fires for private or public recreation and fires in outdoor fireplaces designed for cooking, as long as they are not used as incinerators and their smoke, soot or fly ash do not become a nuisance or annoyance to anyone.

Des Plaines City Code 5-6-2 (American Legal)

Cook County air rules: houses are exempt from registration.

Cook County’s Environmental Control Ordinance applies everywhere in the county except Chicago, so it covers Des Plaines. Sec. 30-151 requires an equipment registration permit before installing fuel-burning equipment or a chimney, but exempts domestic heating plants, which include stoves serving a single-family home, a duplex, or a building with fewer than three apartments. For a stove in a larger condo or apartment building, check with the county first.

What to ask a Des Plaines installer.

  1. Are you registered as a contractor with Des Plaines for this year, and will you apply for the permit through the city portal?
  2. How will you set up this stove so start-up smoke stays within Des Plaines’s Ringelmann No. 1 limit for home heaters?
  3. Which Des Plaines permit type and inspections will this stove or insert need under the 2021 codes?

Answers before you request a quote

Des Plaines wood stove installation FAQs.

Does Des Plaines limit smoke from a home wood stove?

Yes. City Code 5-6-2 prohibits smoke denser than No. 1 on the Ringelmann chart from home heating equipment in single-family residences at all times, and treats annoying smoke or soot as a public nuisance. A certified stove burning dry wood is the practical way to stay within it.

What permit does a wood stove need in Des Plaines?

The city’s pages do not name wood stoves. Permits are applied for online through Community and Economic Development, and the fee code lists new HVAC/mechanical work and alterations. Email permits@desplainesil.gov or call 847-391-5380 to confirm before work starts.

Does Cook County need to approve a wood stove in Des Plaines?

Not for a house. Cook County’s air ordinance requires an equipment registration permit for fuel-burning equipment but exempts domestic heating plants, including stoves in single-family homes, duplexes and buildings with fewer than three apartments. Larger buildings should check with the county.
