Its stoves page lists Forge & Flame wood stoves, and its service-area page names Champaign and Champaign County. It offers ‘installation support’ but doesn’t clearly say its own crew installs wood stoves, so ask whether it installs in Champaign or refers you to an installer, and who files the Building Safety Division permit.

Champaign’s Building Safety Division says permits are required whenever an owner or authorized agent installs, alters or replaces a gas or mechanical system. Only minor repairs to mechanical systems are exempt. One- and two-family work follows the 2021 International Residential Code and 2021 International Mechanical Code, adopted for permits submitted on or after February 1, 2024. Since January 1, 2025, applications go through the city’s online portal. Review takes about five business days once the application is complete. Addition and alteration permits cost $6 per $1,000 of construction cost, with a $45 minimum. Ask the division which permit and inspections apply to your stove, chimney or liner.
City of Champaign: Building Safety DivisionChampaign banned leaf burning in 1991, which ended all open burning in the city. Recreational fires are still allowed if the fuel is limited to untreated logs or branches or charcoal briquettes, in a small metal container or masonry pit at least 10 feet from structures. The ordinance covers outdoor fires, not indoor stoves. Still, untreated, dry wood is also the right fuel for a stove, and the Illinois EPA limits stove fuel to what the manufacturer specifies.
City of Champaign Fire Department: City Burn OrdinanceSection 37-511 of Champaign’s zoning code requires a Certificate of Appropriateness for exterior work on local landmarks and in historic districts, whether or not a building permit is required. Exemptions include ordinary repair and mechanical equipment that can’t be seen from the street. A new chimney or flue visible from the street likely needs review. In conservation districts, only exterior work that needs a building permit on contributing structures is covered.
Champaign Code ch. 37, Article IX Historic Preservation (Municode)The City Council voted on January 9, 2024 to adopt the 2021 International Codes with local amendments, for all projects submitted on or after February 1, 2024. For homes, that means the 2021 IRC, 2021 IMC and 2021 International Fuel Gas Code. Ask your installer to confirm clearances, hearth protection and chimney details against these editions and the stove’s listing.

Not for permits. Champaign and Urbana are separate cities with separate city codes. Champaign’s Building Safety Division handles addresses inside Champaign city limits. For Urbana, Savoy or unincorporated Champaign County, check with the local office before you ask for quotes.
We found no indoor wood-burning restriction in Champaign. The city banned open burning in 1991, but that covers outdoor fires. Illinois EPA says woodstoves are not prohibited in the state, but fuel and operation must follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Permits and code compliance still apply to the installation.
Exterior work on a local landmark or in a local historic district needs a Certificate of Appropriateness, even if no building permit is required. A stove venting through an existing chimney may raise few issues. A new visible flue or chimney probably needs review. Call Planning and Development at 217-403-8800.
