Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Bolingbrook.

Apply to the village Building Division.

Inside village limits, which cross from Will into DuPage County, permits come from Bolingbrook’s Building Division at 375 W. Briarcliff Road (630-226-8470). It requires permits for new construction, renovations, alterations and repairs before work starts, takes applications through its online permit portal, and asks for inspections to be booked at least three business days ahead. The village enforces the 2018 International Residential and Mechanical Codes with amendments. Its pages do not name wood stoves or inserts, and its fireplace handout covers fireplaces, so ask which permit a stove, insert or liner goes under and what drawings to upload.

Outdoor fires: aged logs in a lidded fireplace only.

Bolingbrook’s fire FAQ says open burning is prohibited except for aged logs in a free-standing outdoor fireplace. Only aged logs or commercially made compressed logs may burn, the unit needs screens and a lid that fully enclose the fire, it must sit at least 10 feet from structures, trees and vehicles, and an adult must attend it. These rules govern backyard units, not a vented indoor stove, but they show the village’s line on fuel: seasoned wood only.

Check your installer’s village registration and bond.

Bolingbrook Code Sec. 10-22 says heat-producing equipment may be installed, replaced or repaired only by licensed or registered persons, and only after a permit is issued. Registration needs a surety bond of 10% of the job’s cost but not less than $20,000, plus liability insurance naming the village. The owner of a single-family home may do the work personally if qualified or supervised by a journeyman heating and air conditioning person, still with a permit.

What the fireplace handout asks for.

The village’s Fireplace Permit Tips, dated April 2022, ask for a plat of survey, a floor plan with distances to walls, the listed unit’s installation manual, and chimney height above the roof. It says cutting engineered floor or roof trusses is not allowed, lists a $50 plan review fee and 15–20 working days’ processing, and requires rough and final inspections. Confirm current fees and whether a stove or insert follows the same checklist.

What to ask a Bolingbrook installer.

  1. Are you registered with the Village of Bolingbrook as a heating contractor, with the bond Sec. 10-22 requires?
  2. Which Bolingbrook permit will you file the stove, insert or liner under, and which drawings and manual pages will you upload?
  3. Who will be present for the rough and final inspections, and will the liner be checked before it is covered?

Answers before you request a quote

Bolingbrook wood stove installation FAQs.

Can I install my own wood stove in Bolingbrook?

Possibly. Village Code Sec. 10-22 lets the owner of a single-family home do heating work personally if qualified, or if a journeyman heating and air conditioning person supervises, but only after getting a permit. If you hire someone, the code requires that person to hold a village contractor registration. Ask the Building Division (630-226-8470) what it expects for a stove.

My house is in the DuPage County part of Bolingbrook. Who issues the permit?

The village Building Division, if the property is inside Bolingbrook’s limits. Its pages describe one permit process for the village and do not split it by county. A Bolingbrook mailing address outside village limits may fall under Will or DuPage County, so check your parcel’s jurisdiction before applying.

How long does a Bolingbrook fireplace permit take?

The village’s fireplace handout, dated April 2022, says processing takes 15 to 20 working days and longer if the application is incomplete, and lists a $50 plan review fee paid at submission. Those figures may have changed, so confirm with the Building Division and allow time before booking the install.
