Wood stove permits in Post Falls.

Post Falls Building Division issues a mechanical permit.

Inside city limits, the Post Falls Building Division, on the first floor of City Hall at 408 N. Spokane Street, handles plan review, permits and inspections, and takes applications through its online Community Development Portal. The city’s fee schedule, revised October 1, 2025, lists ‘Solid fuel stoves, inserts, must be listed’ under Mechanical Permits at $25.00, plus a $45.00 processing fee on all permits. Homes outside city limits with a Post Falls address fall under Kootenai County instead. Ask the division what it wants for the listing, clearances, hearth and chimney or liner, and book inspections on its inspection line.

Check DEQ’s Kootenai County advisory before burning.

Idaho DEQ’s Coeur d’Alene regional office issues an Air Quality Advisory for Kootenai County areas, year-round as needed, covering open burning and woodstove curtailment. DEQ says Kootenai County area fire districts voluntarily agreed to follow it. We found no Post Falls ordinance that makes woodstove curtailment mandatory in the city. At YELLOW, DEQ asks everyone to limit woodstove use; at RED it says woodstove restrictions are in effect in many areas and to contact the local DEQ office if unsure.

Plan the chimney for Post Falls snow.

The city’s Current Adopted Codes and Design Criteria sheet, revised February 16, 2025, lists the 2018 IRC and IMC, a 56 psf ground snow load, a 40 psf roof snow load, a 24-inch frost line and severe weathering, with ice shield required on roofs. Ask your installer how the chimney, roof penetration and bracing will handle snow and ice sliding off the roof.

Replacing an old stove? Check the deduction.

Idaho Code 63-3022C lets a taxpayer deduct 40% of the cost of an EPA-certified wood stove, pellet stove or gas or propane heater that replaces an uncertified wood stove in the same tax year, then 20% a year for three years, capped at $5,000 a year. The old stove must be surrendered to DEQ or its agent for destruction.

What YELLOW and RED ask of you.

DEQ’s action legend says many local jurisdictions restrict open burning or woodstove use under a YELLOW advisory, and asks everyone to limit woodstove use if possible. Under RED, woodstove use restrictions are in effect in many areas. It tells residents unsure whether they can heat with their stove to contact the local DEQ office. Check the daily Coeur d’Alene forecast, which covers Kootenai County.

What to ask a Post Falls installer.

  1. Will you apply for the Post Falls mechanical permit under the solid fuel stove line, and is this stove or insert listed as the city requires?
  2. How will the chimney and roof penetration be braced for the city’s 56 psf ground snow load and sliding snow?
  3. Is the stove EPA certified, and if it replaces an old uncertified stove, will you help with the DEQ surrender paperwork for Idaho’s deduction?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Answers before you request a quote

Post Falls wood stove installation FAQs.

Does Post Falls ban wood stoves on poor-air days?

We found no city ordinance that does. Idaho DEQ’s Coeur d’Alene office issues Air Quality Advisories for Kootenai County covering woodstove curtailment, and DEQ says county fire districts follow them voluntarily. At YELLOW, DEQ asks residents to limit stove use; at RED it says restrictions apply in many areas. Check the daily forecast and ask DEQ if unsure.

Does the city’s stage 2 fire-restriction rule affect my stove?

Post Falls Code 8.08.070 is titled as an open-burning ban, but its text says all burning is prohibited in city limits while an Idaho Department of Lands stage 2 fire restriction covers any part of Kootenai County. It exempts outdoor gas fire pits and covered grills. Ask the city whether it applies to an indoor wood stove before relying on one during a stage 2 order.

My address says Post Falls but I’m outside city limits. Who issues the permit?

Confirm the jurisdiction first. The city Building Division handles permits inside Post Falls city limits under its own fee schedule. Unincorporated Kootenai County properties apply to the county instead. Coeur d’Alene, Rathdrum and other nearby cities run their own permit offices, and Washington rules on the Spokane side of the state line do not apply.
