Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in West Haven.

Apply through the Building Department’s online portal.

Inside West Haven, permits come from the Building Department at City Hall, 355 Main Street, 1st floor (203-937-3590). The department issues permits for building, electrical, plumbing, heating and other work and inspects it; since January 1, 2026 all applications go through its online portal. Permit hours are 8 to 11:30 a.m. on weekdays. Applications are reviewed by the Zoning Enforcement Officer for zoning, wetland and flood-plain compliance. The pages do not name wood stoves, so ask which permits cover the stove, chimney or liner. New Haven, Orange and Milford have their own building officials.

On the shoreline? Check the flood zone first.

West Haven’s fee schedule lists a Flood Plain Development Permit for any structure in a designated Special Flood Hazard Area. For a one- or two-family home, mechanical work worth no more than half the structure’s value is filed as a matter of record at no charge; other flood-plain permits cost $25, plus $75 for each required field inspection. Ask whether a stove job counts, and keep the stove and wood storage above expected flood levels.

Fees are $25 per $1,000 of work.

West Haven’s Building Department fee schedule, under section 81-8 of the city code and effective March 7, 2024, charges $25 per $1,000 (or fraction) of the value of work for building permits and for mechanical permits, which include HVAC work. A $25 certificate of completion or occupancy fee applies to all permits, and paper or emailed submissions carry scanning fees. Ask whether your stove falls under a building or mechanical permit.

Clear taxes and paperwork before the permit.

West Haven’s permit instructions say the Building Department checks the parcel’s tax status and will not issue a permit until any delinquency is resolved with the Tax Collector. Applicants also need a workers’ compensation certificate or homeowner affidavit, the contractor’s home improvement registration where required, and the owner’s signed authorization if someone else applies. Fire Marshal approval is needed for buildings other than one- and two-family homes, through the right one of three fire districts.

West Haven wood stove installation FAQs.

Do I need a permit for a wood stove in West Haven?

West Haven’s Building Department issues permits for building, heating and other work and inspects it. Its pages do not name wood stoves, so call 203-937-3590 or apply through the online portal and ask which permits cover your stove, chimney or liner. Permit hours are 8 to 11:30 a.m. on weekdays.

My house is near the shore. Does that change anything?

If your home is in a designated Special Flood Hazard Area, West Haven’s fee schedule lists a Flood Plain Development Permit. For one- and two-family homes, mechanical work under half the structure’s value is filed as a record at no charge. Ask the Building Department whether your stove job needs one.

Why was my permit held up?

West Haven checks the parcel’s tax status and will not issue a permit while taxes are delinquent. Applications also need workers’ compensation proof or a homeowner affidavit and, where required, the contractor’s registration. Clear these before the installer’s start date.
