Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in New Britain.

Apply to Licenses, Permits and Inspections.

Inside New Britain, the Department of Licenses, Permits and Inspections at 27 West Main Street, Room 404 (860-826-3383), open 8:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., runs building code enforcement. Its Building Code Enforcement Division accepts applications for building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical and sprinkler permits, reviews plans, inspects, and covers heating installations. Permits can be applied for online, and fees are based on the cost of the work. Zoning review comes before a building permit where a site plan is needed. The city’s pages do not name wood stoves, so ask whether a stove, insert or liner is a mechanical permit, a building permit or both. Newington, Berlin and Plainville have their own building officials.

Register-listed house? Review comes before the permit.

New Britain’s preservation ordinance, adopted in September 2011, says owners of properties on the State or National Register, or inside a National Register district, must apply for review before exterior work that needs a building permit and is visible from the street. The city brochure says staff or the Historic Preservation Commission sign off first, then Licenses, Permits & Inspections issues the permit, and that applications received seven days before a meeting go on its agenda. A new chimney or visible flue may need review.

Staff approvals wait ten days; certificates last a year.

New Britain’s ordinance, Sec. 19-144, lets the Commission delegate minor alterations to municipal development staff, whose approval takes effect ten days after issuance unless the applicant or chair asks for Commission review. An application not acted on within 45 days is deemed granted. The Commission’s Certificate of Suitability says it is valid for one year, with six-month extensions on request. Schedule installation inside that window.

Re-inspections cost $50 per trade.

New Britain’s Fees and Forms page says building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical permit fees are based on the cost of the work, and that each trade inspector called back for a final re-inspection costs $50. Mechanical repairs or alterations without other work needing a certificate of occupancy end with a $25 Certificate of Approval. Ask your installer whether permit, re-inspection and certificate fees are in the quote.

What to ask a New Britain installer.

  1. Will you file the New Britain mechanical or building permit online and attend the inspections, including any $50 re-inspection?
  2. Is my house on the State or National Register or inside a National Register district, and will the flue or cap be visible from the street?
  3. Will your crew tie the stove into my existing flue, or does the job need a new liner?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.

Answers before you request a quote

New Britain wood stove installation FAQs.

How do I know if New Britain’s historic rules cover my house?

The city’s preservation brochure says the Department of Licenses, Permits & Inspections will check your address when you apply for a building permit and refer you if the ordinance applies. It covers State and National Register properties and National Register districts, not only local districts. The Historic Preservation Commission page also links a map of all historic districts.

What happens after my stove passes inspection?

New Britain’s fee page says mechanical repairs or alterations that need a permit but not a certificate of occupancy end with a Certificate of Approval, a $25 flat fee, showing the work substantially complies with code. If an inspector must return for a final re-inspection, the fee is $50 per trade.

My mailing address says New Britain. Is the city my permit office?

Not always. Newington, Berlin, Plainville and Farmington have their own building officials. New Britain’s permit rules, historic ordinance and fees apply only inside city limits. Check your tax bill or the city’s GIS map before an installer files, and ask the installer to name the town on the permit application.
