Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Milford.

Apply to Building Inspection on West River Street.

Inside Milford, permits come from the Building Inspection Division of the Department of Permitting and Land Use at 70 West River Street (203-783-3234). Building permits and sub-permits, including mechanical permits, are applied for through the city’s online permitting center. The division’s fee schedule, effective January 6, 2020, charges one- and two-family alterations $20 for the first $1,000 of declared value and $15 per $1,000 after that, with heating, ventilation and exhaust work included. No page names wood stoves, so ask which permits cover the stove, liner or chimney. Orange, Stratford and West Haven have their own building officials.

Milford Building Inspection

Two districts, two commissions, two processes.

Milford has a Historic District Commission for District 1, which meets on the second Tuesday of each month, and a separate commission for Historic District No. 2, South of the Green, which meets on the second Wednesday. District 1’s certificate application carries a $75 fee and says occupancy and use before a certificate is issued is prohibited. If a stove adds a chimney, cap or wall vent near the Green, find out which district, if either, covers your address first.

Milford Historic District Commission

South of the Green: ask first, then notify neighbours.

The District No. 2 procedure memo says its commission reviews alterations visible from a public street. Owners should contact a commissioner before scheduling work; if no certificate is needed, the owner gets a letter saying so. Otherwise the application, with a $100 fee and eight copies, is due at least 14 days before the monthly meeting, and the owner must mail notice to property owners within 200 feet in the district.

Inspections: 24 hours’ notice, contractor calls.

Milford’s inspection requirements sheet says inspections must be called in at least 24 hours ahead, scheduling is at the Building Division’s discretion, and the general contractor must call in all inspections for sub-contractors, with permit numbers, address and scope ready. It adds that no walls may be enclosed or insulation installed until rough heating and framing inspections pass. Schedule those before finishing around a new chimney chase.

Fees follow declared job value.

Milford’s Building Permit Fee Schedule, effective January 6, 2020, charges one- and two-family additions, alterations and repairs $20 for the first $1,000 or portion and $15 for each further $1,000, including electrical, heating, ventilation and exhaust work, and the state education fee. A certificate of occupancy or approval is $20. The value is as declared by the applicant and accepted by the building official, so make sure the quote’s value and the permit match.

  1. Will you apply through Milford’s online permitting center, and under which permit does the stove and liner go?
  2. As general contractor, will you call in the rough and final inspections with 24 hours’ notice?
  3. Is the house in Historic District 1 or South of the Green, and will the flue or cap be visible from the street?

Answers before you request a quote

Milford wood stove installation FAQs.

Do I need a permit for a wood stove in Milford?

Milford’s Building Inspection Division issues building and mechanical sub-permits through its online permitting center, and the Connecticut State Building Code applies to alterations. The city’s pages don’t name wood stoves, so call 203-783-3234 to ask which permits apply to your stove, connector and chimney liner before you order equipment.

My house is near the Milford Green. Does a stove need historic approval?

It may. Milford has two local districts with separate commissions. District No. 2, South of the Green, reviews alterations visible from a public street and suggests contacting a commissioner first; if no certificate is needed, you get a letter. District 1 uses a $75 application. An insert in an existing chimney may raise fewer questions than a new flue.

What does the permit cost in Milford?

The fee schedule effective January 2020 charges one- and two-family alterations $20 for the first $1,000 of declared value and $15 for each further $1,000, covering heating and exhaust work, plus a $20 certificate of approval. The building official must accept the declared value, so confirm the total with Building Inspection.
