Details your installer can help confirm

Wood stove permits in Bridgeport.

File through the Park City Portal.

Inside Bridgeport, permits come from the city Building Department at 45 Lyon Terrace (203-576-7225), which lists the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code as in effect. Its building permit page says a permit is required to alter or repair an existing building, that the owner or an authorized agent applies online through the Park City Portal, and that a zoning plan approval is also needed. Separate HVAC permits cover heating and exhaust systems. None of these pages names wood stoves, so ask which permits, zoning sign-off and inspections cover your appliance, chimney or liner. Stratford, Fairfield and Trumbull have their own building officials.

Bridgeport Building Department: Building Permit

Five historic districts review visible exterior work.

Bridgeport’s Historic District Commission covers five local districts: East Bridgeport & Pembroke City, Stratfield, Marina Park, Barnum-Palliser and Black Rock Harbor. Work visible from the street, including siding, windows, roofing, porches and additions, needs its approval. Applications go through the Zoning Department, and the Commission meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 45 Lyon Terrace. If a stove adds a chimney, roof penetration or visible cap, check district status before booking an install date.

Bridgeport Historic District Commission

Heating permit: licensed contractor or owner-occupant.

Bridgeport’s HVAC permit page covers heating and exhaust systems, including erection, alteration, replacement and relocation of equipment. It says a holder of a Connecticut heating, venting and air-conditioning license or their agent may apply, and so may a single-family owner who lives at the property. The page does not name wood stoves; ask the Building Department whether your stove, liner or chimney falls under this permit, the building permit, or both.

Bridgeport Building Department: HVAC permits

No building permit before the certificate in a district.

Connecticut law says that within a local historic district, no building permit for altering an exterior architectural feature may be issued until the historic district commission has issued a certificate of appropriateness, and that the certificate is required whether or not a building permit is. The commission has 65 days to decide. In Bridgeport’s districts, get the certificate first if the stove job changes a chimney, roofline or visible vent.

What to ask a Bridgeport installer.

  1. Will you file the Bridgeport permits on the Park City Portal, including any HVAC permit and zoning approval?
  2. Is my home in one of Bridgeport’s five local historic districts, and will the vent or chimney change anything visible from the street?
  3. Your showroom is outside Bridgeport — is travel included, and who returns for the inspection?

Compare quotes on the same scope.

Request separate details for the appliance, chimney or liner, hearth work, labor, removal, permits, inspections, and exclusions. Confirm any paid assessment before booking.

Will you save on heating?

Answers before you request a quote

Bridgeport wood stove installation FAQs.

Can I file the Bridgeport permit myself?

Bridgeport’s building permit page says the owner or an authorized agent applies through the Park City Portal, and its HVAC permit page allows a single-family owner who lives at the property to apply. Owners are responsible for making sure contractors are licensed. Ask the Building Department which permit covers a wood stove before filing.

I live in Black Rock. Do I need historic approval?

Black Rock Harbor is one of Bridgeport’s five local historic districts. Street-visible changes such as roofing need a certificate from the Historic District Commission, and state law bars a building permit for exterior changes until one is issued. An insert in an existing chimney may change nothing visible; a new flue likely does.

Does Connecticut restrict burning on bad air days?

CT DEEP advises checking the air quality index before burning and not burning wood on days rated unhealthy for sensitive groups or worse. On the pages reviewed this is guidance, not a Bridgeport ordinance. DEEP also recommends EPA-certified stoves and inserts, which it says cut pollution sharply compared with older models.
