Wood stove permits in Erie.

Apply to the Town of Erie Building Division through eTRAKiT.

Inside town limits, the Building Division at 645 Holbrook Street (303-926-2780, weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) reviews plans, issues permits, inspects and licenses contractors. Applications go through the eTRAKiT Self-Service Portal. The town’s permit guide lists fireplaces (wood, pellet, or gas) and mechanical modifications as work that needs a permit; portable chimineas do not. Erie has adopted the 2021 IRC and 2021 IMC, plus the 2024 fire code as adopted by the fire district. The guide does not name wood stoves or inserts, so ask which permit covers yours. Unincorporated addresses go to Boulder or Weld County instead.

Town of Erie: Does my project require a permit?

Check which county your address is in before counting on outage heat.

CDPHE restricts indoor burning on air-quality Action Days, November through March, in seven metro Denver counties, including all of Boulder County; its list does not include Weld County. Erie has homes on both sides. Where the limits apply, EPA-certified stoves, certified pellet stoves and Colorado-approved masonry heaters are exempt, and an uncertified device used as primary heat needs an exemption letter. We found no separate Erie burn-day ordinance. Status changes daily.

Buying a stove? Erie’s code points to state emission rules.

Erie Code 9-1-2 adds section M1302.1.1 to the residential code: solid fuel-burning appliances must comply with Colorado’s emission regulations in effect when the permit is applied for, and Sec. 9-1-5 adds the same sentence to the mechanical code. In practice, bring the model’s certification with your permit application, whichever county side you live on. The town code also bans burning garbage or rubbish in any stove or fireplace.

Boulder County side? New stoves must meet current standards.

CDPHE says any indoor burning device bought or installed in the seven-county metro Denver area, which includes Boulder County, must meet current emission standards; the 7,000-foot exemption covers use only, not installation. If a wood stove is your only heat, it says to contact your local health or building department about an exemption, since most metro municipalities have their own exemption provisions. It also says all wood-burning appliances, certified or not, may burn only clean, dry, untreated wood.

Hiring an installer? Ask for its Erie license.

The Town of Erie requires a contractor license for anyone constructing, altering, remodeling or equipping buildings, applied for through the Self-Service Portal. Its specialty interior renovation license lists indoor fireplace work, and general contractor classes exclude mechanical, electrical and plumbing work. The page says license applications are processed within two to three business days. Ask any stove installer which Erie license it holds before you sign.

  1. Is my address on Erie’s Boulder County or Weld County side, and is this stove EPA certified so it stays usable on Action Days?

  3. Can you show the model meets Colorado’s emission regulations, as Erie’s code requires at permit application?

Answers before you request a quote

Erie wood stove installation FAQs.

Can I use a wood stove in Erie on a winter Action Day?

On the Boulder County side, yes if it is an EPA-certified stove, a certified pellet stove or a Colorado-approved masonry heater; CDPHE exempts those. Uncertified stoves and conventional fireplaces must not be used on Action Days from November through March unless an exemption covers primary heat. CDPHE’s list does not include Weld County.

Does Erie require a permit to install a wood stove?

Erie’s permit guide lists fireplaces (wood, pellet, or gas) and mechanical modifications among work that needs a building permit. It does not name wood stoves, so call the Building Division at 303-926-2780 to confirm the permit type, then apply through the eTRAKiT portal.

Does it matter which county my Erie home is in?

For burning, yes. CDPHE’s Action Day limits cover Boulder County but its list does not include Weld County. Permits do not change: the Town of Erie Building Division handles both sides inside town limits, and the town’s code requires any solid-fuel appliance to meet Colorado’s emission rules.
